The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has shut down a bit in bottle, showing a more delicate bouquet today. Shades of violet, sweet smoke and mentholated black cherries unfold with each swirl. It's elegant in feel with silken textures, mineral-inflected red berry fruits and radiant acidity. A web of fine-grained tannins frames the finish, leaving behind hints of sour citrus, exotic spice and a tart black raspberry concentration. Keep this beauty in the cellar for now, as it’s maturing at a glacial pace.

Rated 95 - Medium bright deep red. Expressive aromas of red cherry, tobacco, mocha and underbrush are lifted by notes of tar and licorice. Sweeter and pliant on entry, with a risingly tannic texture to the dark plum, red cherry and smoky underbrush flavours. Medium to full-bodied, it floats across the palate with ripe tannins, even-keeled fresh acidity, and a chalky texture through the finish. It’s a very appealing wine that will improve if given another year or two. Drink 2025-2037.

This wine shows solid, chalky tannins. Some 7,600 bottles (and larger formats) were made, and they're almost ready straight out of the gate.
