Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard is a similar medium red with a haze and has a floating palate of wet stones, broader shoulders, ripe cherries, savory spice, fresh leather, and toasty notes. Typically, this site produces clusters with tiny berries, contributing to its concentration and structure. Sappy earth emerges as the wine opens, and it keeps building across the palate. It has more youthful toast and a bit of warmth on the finish. Drink 2026-2041.

Matured for 16 months in 68% new French oak, the 2023 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard has slowly opening aromas of boysenberry and blueberry, cast iron, moss and fennel. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled with mineral-driven flavors, velvety tannins, bright acidity and a long, perfumed finish. It feels youthfully coiled and will benefit from several years in the cellar. 400 cases were made.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard is one of the better Williams-Selyem wines I tasted for this report. Deep, fleshy and resonant in the glass, the 2023 offers a compelling mix of dark-toned fruit, spice and sweet new oak. Floral and savory top notes emerge with a bit of time in the glass. All the elements are nicely balanced.

Winery Notes

On the nose, rich, dark berry notes are immediately apparent, and aromas of underbrush and coffee beans soon follow. The Rochioli Vineyard is perfectly situated along the bank of the Russian River, which has a moderating effect and allows for perfect ripening, creating unsurpassed layers of complexity. Aromas of cedar and wood spices further complex the nose, while in the mouth the texture is compelling, as usual, with concentrated and refined tannins that seem to cover every part of the palate. Berry fruit flavors abound and meld with complementary earth notes to create a striking balance in this wonderful vintage.
