The oldest vines in all of Soave: pre-phylloxera centurions, many nearly 140-years-old. The vinosity, sap, mineral undercurrent and sheer persuasiveness of the package, attests to this. A tour de force. Sure, there is the usual crew of stone fruits, ginger crystal, jasmine, frangipani and sea spray salinity. Yet there is also textural persuasion, all chew and chomp, amidst a bowl of scented orchard fruits flecked with botrytised high tones of mango skin. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. ... The 2020 Soave Classico Contrada Salvarenza Vecchie Vigne opens slowly with a beautiful and nuanced bouquet that blends white flowers with young peach, hints of candied lime and sweet smoke. It's silky and perfumed with a lovely inner sweetness contrasting saline minerals and lime-tinged orchard fruits. This tapers off with incredible length yet is poised, leaving spicy citrus and sweet herbal tones to resonate. The 2020 remains in a youthfully backward phase, yet it's developing beautifully with time in the bottle.

This finely meshed white offers poached apricot, pineapple and tangerine fruit flavors that are rich, juicy and enlivened by zesty milled white pepper and pink grapefruit peel notes, which work in tandem with the bright acidity to provide fine balance. Long and minerally, with tactile hints of almond skin and chalk playing on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 800 cases made, 100 cases imported.
Winery
Salvarenza is a tiny sub-plot of the La Frosca Cru vineyard, blessed with 80 year old vines. The grapes are hand harvested and then temperature-control fermented in oak cask of 228 liters. Malolactic fermentation and aging are also in oak: the wine rests on its lees for nine month before bottling. Aged six months in bottle prior to release.

Region: Veneto

As historically one of the most important regions in the world regarding trade and experimentation, it comes as no surprise to discover that Veneto has always been a well respected and innovative wine region. This area of north-easterly area of Italy benefits greatly from a continental climate tempered by the Alps, and plenty of influence from the Germanic countries it is near to. Veneto is most commonly associated with beautifully elegant white wines, such as those of Soave, and has over ninety thousand hectares under vine. Impressively, within that area, over a third of the vineyards in the Veneto region have been granted official AOC status, and many of the sub-regions and appellations of Veneto have gone on to be world-famous in regards to quality. One such example is Valpolicella, where some of Italy's finest and most complex red wines are produced.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
