This historic single vineyard wine, first produced in 1983 at the original Magill Estate just outside Adelaide’s Central Business District, is one of my perennial favourites in the Penfolds portfolio. And perhaps never more so than in 2015, which has produced an absolutely brilliant effort. Deeply coloured from core to rim, this has an exotic and appealingly complex nose of flowers, beef stock and blackberry. The palate is no less exciting, with super-sweet black bilberry and bramble fruit in a coulis-like concentration. Additional cracked black pepper and violet notes provide depth and interest, as do the sumptuously glossy tannins and sublime acidity which gives the wine such purity and charge. Though medium to full-bodied, the overall effect is one of ethereal lightness, balance and harmony. This is far too young to approach now and will reward serious cellaring for another 15-20 years at least. ... More details

Very deep inky black colored, the 2015 Shiraz Magill Estate has a youthfully mute, broody nose of baked blackberries, preserved plums, crème de cassis and mocha with hints of tobacco, hoisin and cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with great elegance and poise, this is a restrained, earthy, understated style with some playful exotic spice nuances coming through on the finish.

The 30% new American oak is assertive from the get-go here. This has a rich, ripe, later harvested feel to it, quite mellow with toffee and fresh leather as well as rich dark plum, blackberry and chocolate. It's a wine of real presence, unashamedly ripe. An impressive edition of this small, home vineyard gem. Unique in many ways. Drink now to 2030.

Saturated ruby color. A deeply perfumed, oak-accented bouquet evokes red and blue fruit preserves, pipe tobacco, licorice and vanilla. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering impressively concentrated black raspberry, cherry-vanilla and bitter chocolate flavors that are enlivened by a core of smoky minerality. Rich and well-structured, finishing with strong thrust, resonating oiliness, and chewy, steadily building tannins. This wine is a baby; give it some time to allow the lumber component a chance to make nice with the abundant fruit.

Supple and juicy, bursting with notes of kirsch, cherry and pomegranate at the core, followed by details of gunpowder tea, iodine, candied ginger and dried sage. The finish becomes increasingly powerful and impressive, with plush tannins. Drink now through 2030. 10 cases imported.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.
