Crisp aromas of lemon glaze and lemongrass pick up earthy tones on the nose of this bottling. Penetrating, citrus-driven acidity plays against a chalky texture on the sip, where honeydew and minty lemon flavors align.

The 2019 Chardonnay Estate was aged on its lees for 10 months in 60% new French oak. Rich and golden in color, it displays a classic Mount Eden nose of honey, cultured cream, toasted almonds, fresh flowers and herbs. On the palate, a round, rich and creamy frame is outlined by soft but refreshing acidity, leading to a confectionary finish. While still in need of some integration, this is a prime example of one of the most consistent Chardonnays in California.

Vibrant and intense, with roasted nut and toasted spice overtones to the plush peach, lemon curd and marmalade notes. Smooth and supple, but there's an elegant thread of acidity weaving in and out, plus a hint of rooibos tea on the finish. Drink now. 824 cases made.

From Mount Eden's website: In the late 1940s and early 1960s, Martin Ray planted six acres of Chardonnay vines propagated from a Burgundian selection grown in the original Paul Masson vineyard. 20 acres of Estate Chardonnay are now farmed at Mount Eden from which 1,200 to 2,000 cases per year are produced. Yields average one to two tons per acre, far below the average for Chardonnay in California. The Estate Chardonnay grapes are harvested when slightly yellow to yellow-green and are pressed without crushing. All of the juice is barrel-fermented in new and one-year-old French Burgundy barrels, where the wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and is ages on the lees for ten months before being lightly filtered prior to bottling. The Chardonnay is then cellared for two years before being released for sale.

Varietal: Chardonnay

For most people, the Chardonnay grape varietal is one of the quintessential white wine grapes. It isn't difficult to understand why; Chardonnay may well have started off in regions of France (where it is still used widely today in both single variety white wines as well as sparkling Champagne wines) but it is now grown in every wine producing country in the world. Indeed, it was the New World that took Chardonnay to some exciting new extremes – this relatively neutral grape has the fantastic ability to carry much of its terroir in the bottle, resulting in a fascinating range of flavors and styles. Furthermore, Chardonnay is one of the few white wine grapes which is well suited to aging, as can be seen in some of the excellent produce consistently coming out of Burgundy, and elsewhere in the world.
