Opaque ruby. Smoke-accented cherry and cassis aromas, complicated by hints of mocha and cured tobacco. Spice-accented dark fruit flavors are enlivened by a jolt of zesty minerality, which adds back-end lift and focus. A licorice note emerges on the persistent finish, which is given grip by dusty, even tannins. ... More details

I also tasted the 2015 Crianza, which matured in 20% new barrels with some time in concrete vats before bottling. This is the selection from the best plots of their vineyards, slightly higher on the slope and with whiter soils, rich in marl, where they got riper grapes. It has high ripeness, 15% alcohol and relatively low acidity, but still does not feel overripe or alcoholic. It seems to have found its balance in an XL way, with a little bit the Chapoutier style of ripe tannins, not through extraction, but polishing them (polymerisation), often with some time in concrete. In fact in 2016 they purchased some concrete vats. The idea is to bottle it in spring 2017 (May/June), for sure before the summer. 18,000 bottles produced.

A meaty red, with dusty earth and savory spice details infused into the cherry and currant notes. Full, plush tannins give structure with accents of wild herb, anise and orange peel dominating the finish. Drink now through 2026. 3,000 cases made, 150 cases imported.

Varietal: Tempranillo

For millennia, the Tempranillo grape varietal has been esteemed and revered by winemakers in their native Spain. These grapes are packed full of intense and fascinating flavors, often rewarding wine drinkers with notes of tobacco, leather, plum and herbs alongside their spicy and full bodied character. Their thick, black skins result in their wines being very deep red in color, and often high in tannins. As such, Tempranillo grapes are usually blended with other fine varietals to produce exceptionally balanced and delicious blended wines, such as those found in La Riot and other important wine regions around the world. Despite them being a notoriously tricky varietal to grow, their popularity continues to increase, and winemakers continue to impress the world with this excellent example of a red wine grape.

Region: Castilla Y Leon

Castilla y Leon, in the heart of Spain, is a fascinating wine region with plenty of history, tradition and character going into each and every bottle which is produced there. The expansive, dry and arid plateau of Castilla y Leon means that the grapevines which grow there have to work hard to reach the moisture below ground, resulting in grapes which express plenty of the terroir they grow in, and thus reveal lots of flavor, aromas and the character of the region itself. Despite the difficult conditions and the blazing heat of Castilla y Leon, plenty of grape varietals grow there. As such, there is a wide range of red and white wines associated with the area, and wineries have generations of experience and expertise in making the most of the fruits they cultivate.

Country: Spain

For over two thousand years, Spain has been responsible for much of Europe's wine production, making the very best of native grape varietals, and more recently experimenting with and perfecting wines made from imported grapes. Of course, the region of La Rioja is renowned world-wide for the quality and characteristics of its wines, which benefit greatly from the warm, dry continental climate of the area, and the fertile soils of the Ebro river basin. However, there is far more to Spanish produce than the complex, aromatic and earthy red wine of this region, as a result of the vast range of wine making traditions and practices, and terrains and climatic conditions found across the country. The region Castilla y Leon produces some of Europe's finest white wines, and the sparkling wines of Cava and the sherries of Jerez are firm favorites for wine lovers around the world.
