Made with 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.5% Malbec and 4.5% Petit Verdot, this had a 100% wild ferment with 100% whole berry and was matured in French oak for 18 months (59% new). My thoughts on this excellent iteration of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, in this excellent season (unmarred by heat skies, bird threat or any kind of disease pressure), remain unchanged from the last time I tasted it. The 2018 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec joins the 2014 as two of the greatest wines every produced at Vasse Felix, and the explosive core of fruit through the middle and back palate illustrates the interminable length that this wine will endure in the cellar. It's a collector's wine, for sure, but also a wine that you should taste as soon as you can in order to understand what I view as being the region's capacity for power, length, tannic profile and fresh fruit. A great edition of the top Cabernet blend from Vasse Felix, this has a lot of power and depth. The aromas run from red to blue and dark berries with a leafy edge and attractive, fresh florals. The palate has a core of blue-toned fruit flavor that drives so deep, with a helix-like interplay of acidity and tannin. Impressive. Drink over the next decade or more. Screw cap.

The super aristocratic 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Tom Cullity, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, is a densely flavoured and structured wine built for the long haul. It boasts incredible concentration yet retains its focus with ink, blackberry and blueberry fruits supported by a rich vein of new, high quality French oak. Significant volume of flavour follows, with waves of fruit plus a gravelly underbelly. A firm bed of tannins sits comfortably with the fruit and all come together to support an incredibly long finish. Benchmark Margaret River Cabernet.

A deep, rich, sensual nose and attack reflects a long, dry, warm Indian summer which extended the ripening period. Reveals dark chocolate, balsamic and delicious vibrato cigar box layers to the plush blackcurrant, black and blue berry fruit. Green coffee bean, sage, terracotta, cooler graphite and cut-finger nuances build. Dynamic, lacy tannins and mineral acidity contain and extend the fruit on a long, brooding finish.

Aromatic, polished and expressive, with Laurel bay leaf, black tea, tapenade and rosemary accents swirling around a core of cassis, huckleberry preserves and salted black licorice. Delivers tannins that are dense but fine-grained, adding an air of elegance, with a touch of violet lingering on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases made, 60 cases imported.

Appearance: Ruby with a purple hue. Nose: a deep perfume of wild berries reveals distinctive savoury characters, woodsy Margaret River Forest and briny ocean breeze. Intense and powerful with dried rose petal and violet paired with earthy aromas of mushrooms, the spice of fresh cedar, and linseed oil. Hints of peppermint tree leaves are complemented by enticing notes of a canelé pastry and dark chocolate. Palate: Incredibly luscious, rich fruit builds into a long, fine, powdery tannin structure. Refreshing floral notes are expressed throughout the palate with lingering blackcurrant and blackberry. Medium bodied, the complexity of ocean and nori influence pairs beautifully with notes of chocolate, leather polish and exotic spices. An elegant, palpable and clean dry finish with earthy power and wild berry custard tart rounding out this complex palate.

Region: Margaret River

When it comes to the south-westerly part of Australia, the Margaret River is by far the most important and productive of the area's wine producing regions. The region itself currently has over five thousand hectares of land under vine, and there are almost one hundred and fifty wineries operating there, making the most of the humid and warm climate many experts claim is remarkably similar to that which is found in the Bordeaux region of France. Such a climate can only produce fantastic yields of grapes of exceptional quality, and indeed, Margaret River currently produces almost twenty percent of Australia's wines. Both red and white wine grapes grow in the region, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sémillon being the varietals most commonly and widely grown.
