The 2018 The Flagship comes from a cellar selection from the single vineyard cuvées and is a powerhouse of a wine in 2018. Revealing a deep purple/blue hue as well as rocking Cabernet Sauvignon notes of cassis, toasted spices, lead pencil, tobacco, and chocolate (it has an almost Pauillac-like character), it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, ripe, building, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It's a beautiful rich, concentrated Cabernet that can be drunk today, yet will be better with 3-5 years in the cellar and is going to evolve for more than two decades.

A barrel selection, “flagship” cuvee, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Flagship is deep garnet-purple colored. It bursts from the glass with opulent notes of baked blackberries, warm black cherries and cassis with nuances of chocolate box, redcurrant jelly, roses and cedar chest. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with black fruit and floral layers, framed by beautifully ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

A soft, supple texture gives in to velvety tannins in this robustly built, complex and intensely powerful wine. Clove, black currant and black pepper dot a midpalate of viscous opulence and generous fruit, accented in tobacco and salty oak. Enjoy best from 2028–2033.

This sports a very zesty edge as loganberry and boysenberry fruit paste flavors hurtle through, laced liberally with licorice root, sassafras and sweet bay leaf accents, with a brambly hint adding more energy to the frankly grippy finish. This is fun now for its rambunctious profile, but should benefit from a bit of cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2036. 550 cases made.

On the rim: Deep, dark charcoal with touches of mahogany and lilac. On the nose: Complex nose with herbs, spices, fruit and fern with rose and potpourri, lingering on blueberry, strawberry, clay, chocolate, and redwood. On the palate: Velvety, elegant entrance evolving on a fresh and fruity mid-palate with raspberry and red cherry, lingering on peaches, mulberry and plum.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

By far and away the most recognized and widely grown red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon. First cultivated in the 18th century in France, this wonderful cross of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes has long since been the most important varietal for red wines across the globe. Now grown everywhere from its native France to the furthest reaches of the New World, Cabernet Sauvignon is adored and prized by wineries for its hardiness and resistance to rot, as well as its large and sharp flavors and wonderful capability for fine aging Indeed, many of the finest wines of history and the modern age would be simply unimaginable without Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with the famed wineries of Bordeaux and other important regions using it as the primary grape in their oak aged produce. High tannin levels, acidity and powerful flavors are the characteristics most commonly associated with this varietal, however, when blended and slowly aged, it is capable of a world of flavors and aromas unmatched by any other grape.

Region: California

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.

Appellation: Napa Valley

For generations now, Napa Valley has consistently produced the finest wines to come out of the United States, and has used its ideal climate and terroir to coax the very finest flavors and aromas from a wide range of grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Zinfandel, amongst many others.
