This warm, ripe wine shows touches of yellow fruits as well as a cut of attractive citrus. At this stage, the wood aging shows in spice and toastiness, but these will go as the wine fully integrates. Drink from 2024. (Cellar Selection)

A blend of 42% Semillon and 58% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested between the 3rd and 17th of September, the 2019 Blanc came in at 50 hectoliters per hectare and 13.8% alcohol. Aromas of fresh lemons, yellow apples and white peaches gently waft from the glass with emerging nuances of baking bread, almonds and spice cake. The medium-bodied palate has electric intensity with the tightly wound citrus layers well-supported by racy acidity, finishing savory.

A medium- to full-bodied white with aromas of dried grapefruit, lemon curd, fennel, gooseberries and cloves. Rich, compact and spicy with a pithy edge. Drink or hold.

Pure and refined, with an alluring mouthfeel as gooseberry gelée, white peach, verbena and wet straw notes glide through, all while being supported by embedded fleur de sel and savory threads through the finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2025. 3,250 cases made, 700 cases imported.

Round, honeyed lemon, softer, more subtle, you can feel the weight of the oak on the palate with its spicy, heavy edges. Good freshness, though, with lifted lemon, lime and orange blossom. A touch sharp and perhaps the spice is too much right now.

The 2019 Latour Martillac Blanc is slightly chalky on the nose, with hints of wild mint in the background. Quite subtle, it unfolds discreetly. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, gradually building with grapefruit, citrus peel and spice. Quite dry and aloof on the finish, yet this contains an element of intrigue. Maybe just closing down a little? Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Varietal: White Bordeaux

When it comes to blended white wines, few regions in the world have a reputation quite as famed or respected as that of Bordeaux. The blended white wines of this special region are most commonly made using a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grape varietals, although there are six other varietals allowed for the inclusion in Bordeaux white wines by French law. However, the other six - Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac – are seen less and less frequently in blended white Bordeaux wines today. The wineries of Bordeaux make the most of their warm, humid climate to ensure that the grapes are harvested when they are beautifully ripened, and have centuries of experience and expertise when it comes to coaxing out their best features, and balancing each others characteristics in the bottle.

Region: Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France is possibly the most famous and widely respected wine region in the world. Known primarily for its exceptional blended red wines, made most commonly with Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grape varietals, it also produces superb dry white wines (both blended and single variety), alongside the highly esteemed sweet wines of Sauternes. All of these wine types use a careful mix of traditional wine-making methods alongside modern techniques, as well as more experimental and unorthodox practices such as turning their grapes over to the noble rot which intensifies the flavors in the sweet wines. Bordeaux benefits greatly from its position amongst wide river basins, and the cooling Atlantic breezes which blow across the rolling vineyards which cover this region.

Country: France

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce. This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines. Such dedication and passion for fine wine, representative of the region in which it is produced, means customers can be assured that when they buy a bottle from France, they are buying something almost certain to please and delight.
