Unfurling in the glass with a youthfully reserved nose of raspberries, wild plums, spices, white tea and rose petals, the 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with real concentration, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins. Still quite tightly wound after its recent bottling—a matter of weeks before I tasted it—this will, as ever, merit several years in the cellar. At maturity, I suspect the 2019 will be more dynamic than the 2018 rendition, and it will delight admirers of serious cru Beaujolais. ... More details

Deep, vivid ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red and blue fruits, baking spices and candied lavender, and a smoky mineral note builds in the glass. Stains the palate with vibrant black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that show bright definition and a firming spine of juicy acidity. Fine-grained tannins give shape and grip to lingering red fruit and floral qualities on the impressively long, nervy finish.

Attractive poached strawberries and raspberries with some light, pastry-like nuances. The palate has attractive, crisp wild cherries and raspberries with juicy, dark-strawberry flavors to close. Drink now.
Winery
100% Gamay. Desvignes has 2 hectares of eastern-exposed vines averaging 40 years old in the historic Morgon lieu-dit of Javernières at the foot of the famous hill of the Côte du Py. The soils are much heavier and stickier with deep, iron-rich red clay here versus the more schistous "rotten rock" up the Py hill. The exposure is also more easterly; the wines tend to be dense but soft and more red-toned and elegant versus the darker, more muscular, older-vine ones off of the Côte du Py. Viticulture and vinification are consistent across all Desvignes wines. The vines are certified-organic and harvested by hand. The clusters go through a semi-carbonic maceration in closed concrete vats, with a submerged-cap maceration of 10-14 days. A very small amount of sulfur (1-2 grams/hectoliter) is added after malo and sometimes at bottling. The wine is aged in concrete tank for about 9 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.

Region: Burgundy

The region of Burgundy has become synonymous with high quality red wines, but in actual fact the region consistently produces a wide variety of fine wines of many different styles, rigorously protected by French wine laws designed to keep reputations and quality at a very high level. The region benefits greatly from a warm and sunny summer climate, which, coupled with the excellent quality soils which typify the region, and centuries of experience and expertise, has led to the region being known all over the world for the excellence of its produce. The majority of grapevines grown here are of the Pinot Noir varietal, which has helped Burgundy become known as the definitive region for elegant and smooth red wines, but Chardonnay grapes and many others are also grown in abundance and used to make both still and sparkling wines.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
