Matured primarily in stainless steel, this fresh-fruited red is packed with summer-sweet blackberry and plum goodness edged by salty, smoky minerality. A Grenache-dominant blend sourced from each of de Nalys' three plots, it's an immediate and hedonistic yet soulful wine best enjoyed now to 2026.

Saturated ruby. Ripe, spice- and smoke-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry cola and garrigue on the assertively perfumed nose. Juicy red and dark berry flavors are braced by a spine of smoky minerality and pick up licorice and cured meat nuances with aeration. Concentrated but lively, with no rough edges. A floral quality emerges on the persistent finish, which features even tannins that lend shape and gentle grip.

The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Nalys Saintes Pierres De Nalys showed well, with a pretty, silky, elegant style as well as notes of framboise, strawberries, and peppery herbs. It’s more up-front and mid-weight than I remember from barrel, but it’s still a very pretty, elegant red that does well in the vintage.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.
