Some funk here, but it gels really well with the white-peach and white-currant aromas. Very juicy with an exciting interplay of natural-grape sweetness and mineral acidity that makes the long finish dangerously refreshing. A joint venture of Douro winemaker, Dirk Niepoort and Mosel vintner, Philipp Kettern. Drink now. ... More details

Sporting one of the more fanciful and complicated Fio labels (and that’s saying something!), this wine’s name is a play on words, “cabinet” being the borrowed English word from which Kabinett was derived, and which for two centuries served as an approbative term for select German Rieslings, and sehr nett meaning “very nice.” As with the corresponding 2016, the source is early pickings from high-elevation Piesport sites, the wine received nearly 11 months’ élevage, and it’s delicate with moderate sweetness. Piquantly pit-inflected white peach mingles on the nose with passion fruit and zesty grapefruit. The palate impression, while alcoholically lightweight, is surprisingly dense. Zest and pit inflections serve for invigoration, while tangy citrus along with saline suffusion supply refreshment and salivary stimulation on a satisfyingly lingering finish, though one lacking the vintage 2016 rendition’s striking clarity and sense of active mineral impingement.

We have to have one more classic Mosel style wine classic wine in the portfolio,” says Marco. “This is our super top Mosel; a unique wine, no one can copy.” This is a “Cabi Very Nice” an old-fashioned Kabinett, harvested early with low alcohol and high acidity aged in a barrel with native ferment. Marco says, “It’s our repair wine. It doesn’t tire you out and a good, sweet wine has to be dry to be good.” Grape: Riesling Region: Mosel Fermentation and élevage: Spontaneous fermentation in fuder from the 1960s; kept on the lees for 12 months, then held in bottle for 2-3 years Farming: Practicing Organic

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes are very rarely blended with others in the development of wines, and for good reason. These pale grapes which originated in the cool Rhine Valley of Germany are notable for their 'transparency' of flavor, which allows the characteristics of their terroir to shine through in wonderful ways. The result of this is a wine which carries a wide range of interesting flavors quite unlike those found in other white wines, finished off with the distinctively floral perfume Riesling supplies so well. Many wineries in Germany and elsewhere tend to harvest their Riesling grapes very late – often as late as January – in order to make the most of their natural sweetness. Other methods, such as encouraging the noble rot fungus, help the Riesling grape varietal present some truly unique and exciting flavors in the glass, and the variety of wines this varietal can produce mean it is one of the finest and most interesting available anywhere.

Country: Germany

If German wine has had something of a bad reputation in the past, it may well be the fault of the fact that for a long time now, the Germans have simply kept all the best produce to themselves. Visit any town or village in wine producing regions of Germany, and you'll be faced with a stunning array of extremely high quality wines, each matched with local dishes and full of distinct character and flavor. As white wine production makes up for about two-thirds of all Germany's wine industry, this is by far the most visible and widely enjoyed type of wine, but one should not overlook the quality and range of rosé and red wines on offer from this fascinating country. In particular, the Spatburgunder wines (the German name for Pinot Noir) are generally of an exceptionally high quality, being full of dark, intense hedgerow fruit flavors and exciting spicy notes with a silky smooth finish.
