This has striking purity on the nose with a very, very fresh, focused and fragrant nose with superb clarity of fine citrus fruit and crushed stones. The very dry palate (just north of 2 g per liter) has a succulent, smooth texture, plenty of grapefruit and a creamy finish. Drink or hold. ... More details

Wafting of spring blossoms, smoke and raspberry brambles, this is such a delicately perfumed Riesling. It's slim in profile but beautifully defined, etched by layers of luminous white peach and grapefruit along with a bold, intensely slaty core. It's quiet in youth but should gain depth well through 2030 and hold further still. (Editors' Choice)

The 2018 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Silberlack GG is intense and rich on the aromatic nose. Rich yet also finessed and vibrantly fresh on the palate, this is an energetic and lingering salty Riesling with a long and tensioned finish. Tasted in June 2020, one year after the bottling.

Ripe, with peach, melon and beeswax aromas and flavors, followed by hints of spice and stone. There's ample flesh, balanced by vibrant acidity. Hints of cream emerge as this glides to a long aftertaste of melon and mineral. Drink now through 2028. 1,000 cases made, 25 cases imported.

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes are very rarely blended with others in the development of wines, and for good reason. These pale grapes which originated in the cool Rhine Valley of Germany are notable for their 'transparency' of flavor, which allows the characteristics of their terroir to shine through in wonderful ways. The result of this is a wine which carries a wide range of interesting flavors quite unlike those found in other white wines, finished off with the distinctively floral perfume Riesling supplies so well. Many wineries in Germany and elsewhere tend to harvest their Riesling grapes very late – often as late as January – in order to make the most of their natural sweetness. Other methods, such as encouraging the noble rot fungus, help the Riesling grape varietal present some truly unique and exciting flavors in the glass, and the variety of wines this varietal can produce mean it is one of the finest and most interesting available anywhere.

Region: Rheingau / Rheinhessen

Rheingau in Germany is one of the country's most prodigious and well respected wine regions, with the south facing slopes of the mountains in the area producing Riesling grape vines of exceedingly high quality. The region has a wine making history which stretches back for centuries, and the wineries of Rheingau have long since mastered the art of expressing the beautiful, windswept and mineral rich terroir through their characterful white wines. With only three thousand hectares of Rheingau being under vine, the region is relatively small, yet has been home to many of the country's finest wines, and a large proportion of the most important viticultural innovations of Germany. Whilst Riesling is by far the most popular grape varietal in Rheingau, Pinot Noir is also grown quite widely, and today, many wineries are continuing to experiment with new grape varietals in order to make a wider range of wines.

Country: Germany

Much has changed over the past few decades in regards to German wine. Long gone are the days of mass produced, sickly sweet white wines which were once the chief exports of this fascinating and ancient wine producing country, and they have been replaced with something far more sophisticated. Whilst Germany continues to produce a relatively large amount of dessert wine, the wineries of the south of the country have reverted their attention to the production of drier, more elegant wines which really make the most of the fine grape varieties which flourish there. Many of the wineries dealing primarily with the excellent Riesling grapes have produced some truly exceptional dry and semi-sweet wines over the past few years, and it seems the world has finally woken up and noticed the extremely high quality of the distinctive produce coming out of Germany today.
