The 2021 Grenache Noir comes from Paadeberg in Swartland, 30% whole bunches aged 16 months in 500-liter French oak and Stockinger barrels. It has a charming cherry liqueur and crushed strawberry-scented nose. Winery
• Grenache. • This was the first parcel that Marelise purchased in 2011 and is “core to her wine story”. • Low yielding bush-vines planted in the Paardeberg, Swartland. • Decomposed granite. • Gentle and minimum intervention with a ‘hands-off ’ approach. • Hand harvested in the early morning. • Bunches were destemmed into small fermenting tanks with 30% whole clusters. • 4 days of cold soaking before fermentation. • Fermented with indigenous yeast. • Punch downs were done by hand, twice a day. • 10 day Post-fermentation maceration. • A total of 4 weeks on the skins before the grapes were gently pressed with an old basket press into old Foudre for malolactic fermentation and maturation. • Total of 16 months in old French oak. • Bottled unfined.

Varietal: Grenache

The purple skinned Grenache grapes have become, over the past few decades, one of the most widely planted grape varietals on earth, thanks to their unique characteristics and the fact that they are an ideal varietal for use in both single variety and blended wines. They tend to be very light in body, due to the fact that they have low tannin levels and not much acidity to them. However, they can add a boost of alcohol to any blended wine, and also offer their complex and spicy flavors of pepper and dark berries. Grenache grapes grow very well in dry and arid region, such as their native home of central Spain, and struggle with damp conditions in which they are prone to rot or develop mildew. Thankfully, modern techniques and technology has managed to overcome many of these problems, resulting in this varietal continuing to grow in use and popularity.

Region: Coastal Region

The coastal region of South Africa is a wonderful place for viticulture. With gorgeously long, hot summer days, tempered by brisk oceanic winds, the grapevines can grow healthily, the fruit can ripen fully, and beautiful wines of great character and flavor can be made. For several hundred years now, the coastal region of South Africa has proven itself to be a highly important wine region, capable of supporting many grape varietals, suitable for still, fortified and sparkling wines. Today, the most popular grapes by far are Chenin Blanc, which produces the most recognizable wines of South Africa. However, also popular are many of the Bordeaux varieties of red and white grape, along with relative newcomers, such as Pinotage, which grow exceptionally well in the coastal terroir.

Country: South Africa

As geographically diverse country, with everything from lush green valleys to areas of arid desert, mountainsides and river estuaries, South Africa unsurprisingly produces a huge range of excellent wines. Regions such as the Breede River Valley consistently impress with their Semillon wines and the lush, fruity Ruby Cabernets grown and processed here, and the cooler region of Overberg is attracting much attention as a result of their silky Pinot Noir bottles. However, all over the oceanic tip of this fascinating country, traditional methods dating back over three hundred years are combining with modern technologies to produce some of the finest examples of New World wines to be found anywhere on the globe.
