This just takes off at the finish, with bright, tangy acidity and plenty of minerality. Full-bodied and so tangy and energetic. Fantastic chardonnay. Hints of aniseed and flint. Grows in the glass. Delicious now, but will age beautifully. ... More details

The 2018 Chardonnay Reserve comes from the coolest section of the 130 planted acres at Eden Rift, and was aged in 25% new French oak. Its aromas unfold slowly to baked apples, pie crust and sweet spices with an undercurrent of salted almonds and stone. The medium-bodied palate is broad and juicy, with understated flavors and a mineral-driven finish. 204 cases produced.

A rather opulent style of Chardonnay aged on 25% new French oak, this reserve bottling offers buttered peach, macadamia nut, light butterscotch and a hint of lemon zest on the nose. The palate is toasty with baked apple and blistered almond flavors, which are cut by zesty lemon peel leading into a pecan finish.

Lots of stone fruits, orange blossom, green almond, and lemon curd notes emerge from the 2018 Chardonnay Reserve, another lively, elegant Chardonnay from this estate. It benefits from air and is going to evolve for 4-6 years.
Winery
A selection of 4 barrels were called out for Eden Rift's Reserve Chardonnay. All from block A, the fruit was hand-harvested at night on the first day of october. At the winery, the grapes were whole-cluster pressed with the resulting juice transferred to a holding tank for cold-settling. Following 24 hours of settling the juice was racked to French oak barrels (25% new) for fermentation. Fermented on native yeast, the wine was aged "sue-lie" for over 10 months before being bottled.

Varietal: Chardonnay

For most people, the Chardonnay grape varietal is one of the quintessential white wine grapes. It isn't difficult to understand why; Chardonnay may well have started off in regions of France (where it is still used widely today in both single variety white wines as well as sparkling Champagne wines) but it is now grown in every wine producing country in the world. Indeed, it was the New World that took Chardonnay to some exciting new extremes – this relatively neutral grape has the fantastic ability to carry much of its terroir in the bottle, resulting in a fascinating range of flavors and styles. Furthermore, Chardonnay is one of the few white wine grapes which is well suited to aging, as can be seen in some of the excellent produce consistently coming out of Burgundy, and elsewhere in the world. With everything from buttery, creamy characteristics to vibrant tropical fruit notes, Chardonnay will never cease to surprise and impress.

Region: California

California has long been the New World's most important and prodigious wine producing regions, with a history which stretches back to the 18th century and the Spanish pioneers who settled here. Today, California produces vast quantities of wine, and if it were a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine on earth. Despite experiencing many problems in the mid 20th century, including a very serious blight which almost crippled the state's wine industry, the ideal terroir and excellent climate ensured that Californian wines soon became the envy of the New World once again. California produces a vast range of wines, and utilizes a long list of fine grape varietals, with many wineries and their produce more closely resembling those of France and other Old World countries in regards to character, practices and flavors

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.
