The 2020 Gutedel Viviser is another excellent Chasselas from the Ziereisen family. It was basket-pressed and aged in large oak casks on the lees for about 20 months. The nose is deep, intense, pure, spicy/stony and even reminiscent of fresh green olive oil but also iodine notes of crushed limestones. Round, intense and elegant on the palate, this is a saline, fresh, seriously structured and persistent Chasselas with vibrant mineral grip and tension and a refreshingly pure finish that still doesn't offer anything for hedonists. Sustainable freshness and lightness paired with character. The name "Viviser" is an old name for the Gutedel. The Gutedel comes from the Swiss Vevey and the German name is Vivis, therefore it used to be Viviser. Notes of citrus and peach in the bouquet, not banal or one-dimensional. On the palate minerality, spice and citrus fruit. Noticeable, but well-integrated, ripe acidity that gives the wine its freshness. A characterful, prancing drinking wine that is not obtrusive and therefore the ideal companion for many occasions. Aging potential of at least six years.

Much has changed over the past few decades in regards to German wine. Long gone are the days of mass produced, sickly sweet white wines which were once the chief exports of this fascinating and ancient wine producing country, and they have been replaced with something far more sophisticated. Whilst Germany continues to produce a relatively large amount of dessert wine, the wineries of the south of the country have reverted their attention to the production of drier, more elegant wines which really make the most of the fine grape varieties which flourish there. Many of the wineries dealing primarily with the excellent Riesling grapes have produced some truly exceptional dry and semi-sweet wines over the past few years, and it seems the world has finally woken up and noticed the extremely high quality of the distinctive produce coming out of Germany today.
