The white of the vintage in Saint Joseph is the 2014 Saint Joseph les Granits Blanc. Coming all from one of the top terroirs in the region, the granite soils of the lieu-dit Saint Joseph, this 100% Marsanne release boasts terrific aromas and flavors of buttered citrus, poached pears, honeysuckle, spice and caramelized pineapple. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and textured, yet also elegant and silky, it should be a must buy by anyone who loves northern Rhône whites. It will have 10-15 years of prime drinking. ... The white of the vintage in Saint Joseph is the 2014 Saint Joseph les Granits Blanc. Limpid gold. A wild, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes fresh orchard and pit fruits, orange zest and iodine, complemented by a chalky mineral overtone and a hint of jasmine. Sappy, incisive and pure on the palate, offering concentrated pear and nectarine flavors underscored by a smoky quality. Shows outstanding energy and focus on the finish, which lingers with serious, minerally tenacity. (Incidentally, the 2005, which I drank in early March, was wonderful, offering excellent depth and ripe pit fruit, honey and toasted nut qualities.)

Ripe, but restrained in style, with a core of creamed yellow apple, anise, melon and white peach flavors carried by a light citrus zest thread. A stony echo through the finish adds contrast to the creamy fruit. Drink now through 2024. 45 cases imported.

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.
