The 2014 Carbonnieux Rouge has a delightful, clean and pure bouquet with gravel and sous-bois scents neatly interwoven into the blackberry fruit. It feels quite understated, but it gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a keen line of acidity that lends this impressive tension and vibrancy. There is not enormous length here, but the sorbet-like freshness wins you over. Keep in the cellar for 2-3 more years and then enjoy over the next 15-18 years. ... More details

The 2014 Carbonnieux is not showing as I expected although I tasted another bottle soon afterwards in Bordeaux. This is more representative with those sous-bois, warm gravel scents permeating the aromatics and the palate alive with tension and a sense of energy. Perhaps it is not quite as precise as I remember although there remains impressive length to complete this classic Pessac-Léognan. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

This is a firmly structured wine, solid with fine tannins. Behind the tight facade, there is plenty of fruit as well as the acidity typical of the vintage. It will develop into a deliciously juicy wine. Drink from 2024.

The menthol and cassis nose here leads into quite a traditional wine, but the dry tannins aren’t a jot too much. This is a very solid wine that will gain in harmony with a few years’ ageing. Try in 2020.

On the fruit spectrum, we are in fresh crunchy redcurrant and raspberry territory, some lovely clean tannins, great lift, all around this is an attractive fresh style, perhaps a touch lean. This is the first vintage with their completely new vat room and new inert presses to limit oxygen contact. Reasonable alcohol levels at 13.5%abv, this is an attractive medium-term drinking wine showing touches of complexity and clever winemaking. Drinking Window 2021 - 2035.

Juicy, with a compact feel to the core of cherry and currant flavors, backed by bramble and tobacco notes, accented by a light loam echo. Should unwind nicely. Best from 2018 through 2024. 23,335 cases made.
Winery
The vinification, both modern and traditional of red wines, is carried out by slow and gentle extraction in order to preserve the roundness of the wine and the mineral features of the soil. The tannins are well balanced and silky in harmony with red fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry…) and reveal toasted notes from ageing in the finest quality French oak barrels. Only the very best batches tasted are selected for the final blending of Château Carbonnieux red wines. Wine and food pairing : all grilled, roast, or stewed meat, swordfish, tuna fish, cheese, chocolate desserts…

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

Bordeaux red wines are widely regarded as being the finest red wines produced anywhere in the world, regularly topping awards lists and generally being amongst the most sought after and collectable bottles available. The secret to their success and their particularly memorable and refined characteristics is the fact that Bordeaux red wines are made from a blend of grape varietals, most commonly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, helped by a touch of Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc. The other two key Bordeaux grape varietals which are also used in the blend of many of these excellent wines are Malbec and Carménere, although it is becoming less common to see these in use today. The art of blending primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals is something which has been much imitated around the world, as it produces a wonderfully balanced, rounded yet massively complex and flavorful wine, ideal for oak aging The acid and tannin levels in each of these grape varietals is balanced and tempered by the blend, and generations of expertise has gone into the careful selection and cultivation of such quality grapes.

Region: Bordeaux

There are few wine regions in the world with a reputation as glowing and well established as that of the Bordeaux, in France. Situated mainly around the Dordogne and Gironde rivers, Bordeaux makes the most of its humid climate and rich, clay and gravel based soils to grow some of the finest examples of red and white grape varietals on earth. Wineries in this region have been in operation for hundreds of years, and have carefully developed the expertise required for the production of carefully balanced and utterly delicious blended red and white wines, alongside some exceptional single variety bottles. Many of the chateaux found in Bordeaux have become household names, due to their prestige and the excellence of their products, grown with love and dedication by heritage wineries in this beautiful and special region.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
