All the colors of pepper and star-anise notes give this alternative “Chateauneuf” a very striking personality. A smoky note develops with aeration. Rich and concentrated, but with assertive tannins that brusquely push the wine over the palate. Still very young. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. ... More details

Friendly, forward style, with a mouth-filling core of crushed plum and boysenberry fruit laced with lavender and anise flavors. The juicy, open-knit finish has a nice savory edge. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignano and Cinsault. Drink now. 1,000 cases made, 150 cases imported.
Winery
2015 was the first vintage of this new project that Julien made with his friend Yannick Alliaud. They found a very old-vine parcel located at 125 meters above sea-level in Chateauneuf-de-Gadagne, just east of Avignon. The soils are very similar to La Crau in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with layers of sand, clay, and the famous galets stones found in Châteauneuf. The Grenache vines were planted in the 1930's (about 55% of the blend) and the Mourvedre (12% of the blend) and Cinsault were planted just after WWII. The balance is Syrah, Cinsault, and Carignan. The vines are goblet-trained, which protects the fruit from the sun. A strict sorting ensured the best fruit from this already low-yielding parcel. The wine was made in the old gravity-fed cellar built in 1930, with cement tanks built into the floor. The wine spent four weeks on the skins with ripe whole clusters and then aged in old foudres and 600 liter demi-muids for 18 months. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.

However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country.
