Vivid straw-yellow. Highly perfumed citrus and orchard fruit and floral qualities on the mineral-accented nose. Shows excellent concentration as well as vivacity, offering palate-staining pear, Meyer lemon and brioche flavors that stretch out steadily with air. The floral and mineral elements return emphatically on the intense, sharply focused finish, which lingers with serious persistence. ... More details

Creamed pear, melon and green fig notes form the core, with a frame of honeysuckle and heather adding range. Plump overall, but a verbena streak adds freshness for balance through the gently toasted finish. This has lots of range and is sneaky long. Drink now through 2027. 250 cases made, 20 cases imported.

Always a brilliant wine, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is the normal blend of all the permitted varieties, brought up in tank with malolactic fermentation blocked. This beauty offers classic apple blossom, crushed rock-like minerality, and ample citrus in a clean, crisp, yet also concentrated package. It will be better with short-term cellaring yet keep for two decades.

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a stunningly concentrated effort produced from minuscule yields of only ten hectoliters per hectare. Made and aged entirely in stainless steel, it offers aromas of apple blossoms and tangerines. This medium to full-bodied white combines richness and lime zest, and it seems to be developing quickly. Already showing hints of honey and truffle, I would opt for drinking it on the young side, although Paul-Vincent Avril likes his whites after ten or more years of cellaring.

Varietal: White Rhone Blend

For centuries, the Rhone region of France has been producing blended white wines of exceptional quality and character, which are consistently counted as being amongst the finest in the world. The skill and expertise demonstrated by the master vintners of this special region has been much imitated and emulated across the globe, but few other countries can come close to the excellence of the original. The secret to the superb flavors and character of blended Rhone wines are the careful use of a couple of high quality grape varietals, with most wineries using no more than two varietals in their blend. The grapes used are most commonly Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne or Grenache Blanc, and these particular varietals lend the blended white wines of Rhone their distinctive floral aromas and brightness of flavor.

Region: Rhone Valley

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
