The 2017 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard is in a fine spot for drinking now and over the next few years. Blue-toned fruit, spice, leather, iron, blood, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers build nicely. A dollop of Viognier and some stems (25%) add aromatic lift along with layers of complexity. Its nice to taste a wine with a good bit of tertiary nuance, but I would not push my luck on aging. ... • Practicing Organic. • 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier co-fermented. • Rodgers Creek Vineyard (Petaluma Gap – Sonoma Coast). • Planted in 2002 to David Ramey’s specifications. • 800 ft. elevation on the cooler side of Sonoma Mountain. • Old, rocky volcanic soils. • 25% whole cluster. • Native yeast and malolactic fermentations. • Aged 25 months sur lies in 100% new French oak.

The 2017 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard is in a fine spot for drinking now and over the next few years. Blue-toned fruit, spice, leather, iron, blood, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers build nicely. A dollop of Viognier and some stems (25%) add aromatic lift along with layers of complexity. Its nice to taste a wine with a good bit of tertiary nuance, but I would not push my luck on aging.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.
