A beautiful, pure sangiovese that competes nicely with Brunello, showing depth and tension. A solid line of fine tannins runs through the center of the wine, providing backbone and beauty to the cherry and berry fruit. Drink or hold.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ermo Colle is an impressive wine from Terra di Seta. Macerated dark cherry, leather, licorice, sweet tobacco, cedar all flesh out in the glass. The 2016 is powerful, rich and tannic. I would give it a few years in bottle to allow those tannins to soften.

The Terra di Seta 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ermo Colle is 100% Sangiovese that ages in barrique and tonneaux for 24 months. This wine sports a generous and modern personality with opulent dark fruit, spice, black cherry and tilled earth. This is a structured, full-bodied wine with a powerful 15% alcohol content. The wine finishes with toasted spice and tar. This is a tiny production of just 700 bottles.

From the organoleptic viewpoint, in general the Gran Selezione has a great structure that, for its provenience, gives superior balance and harmony, depth of flavor and aromatic complexity, all under the unmistakable “Sangiovese” signature. On the palate it combines immediacy of fruit with the fascinating nuances, typical of wines that take long to evolve. It is a pleasantly intense wine, fruity and spicy, slightly balsamic on the nose, smooth, consistent and persistent in the mouth.

Wines made with the round, darkly colored Sangiovese grape varietal tend to demonstrate the grape's key attributes: high acidity, moderate tannins and pale red color These grapes have been grown in their native Italy for thousands of years, and are said to be one of the key varietals which were so loved by the ancient Etruscan and Roman civilization Fast forward a few millennia, and all over the world, wineries are still growing these grapes in order to capture that renowned and flavorful essence. What makes Sangiovese so loved by drinkers and vintners alike is its wonderful ability to soak up the earthy, woody flavors of the oak barrels they are aged in, and present these in the glass alongside fresh, bright summer fruit notes. Whilst Sangiovese grapes are often blended during the fermentation process, they are also drank as single variety wines, both young and fresh, and aged and complex.

The main grape varietals grown in Tuscany are Sangiovese for the distinctive, flavorful and complex red wines, and Vernaccia for the exquisite dry white wines, although the last couple of decades have seen more varietals grown and an increasing trend towards 'Bordeaux style' wines.

These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.

This is the finest Chianti Classico I have ever tasted. It has been aged and bottled with perfection. Even though it is a 2016, it tastes young and fresh and exuberant. Just bought a case.
