Aromas of crushed mint, baked plum and whiffs of oak-driven spice form the nose. On the enveloping, full-bodied palate, velvety tannins accompany fleshy Morello cherry, blackberry jam and baking spice. Drink 2023–2028.

An intense and spicy mix of raspberry and blackberry preserves, hints of mocha, sage and spicy citrus wafts up from the 2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Vigneto Santa Pia. The textures are soothing and enveloping, with fleshy red fruits and minerals that coast along a core of zesty acidity. This tapers off to notes of ripe plums and balsam herbs over a coating of nuanced tannins. I'm loving the symmetry here, yet also the early appeal that the 2017 Vigneto Santa Pia possesses.

A vibrant, typically aromatic nose with red berry fruit notes and a hint of vanilla. The flavour is rounded, well-structured and balanced with sweet lingering tannins.

Varietal: Sangiovese

Sangiovese grapes have been grown in their native Italy and several other countries for a very long time now, with many experts claiming that they were even enjoyed by the ancient Etruscan civilization, long before the spread of the Roman Empire which helped raise the profile of this dark colored and flavorful varietal. It isn't difficult to understand their enduring appeal – the Sangiovese grape varietal delivers wines which are the epitome of finery, soaking up delicate and complex oak and vanilla flavors from the barrels they are aged in, or leaving light, refreshing strawberry notes on the tongue when drank young. Whilst many traditional wineries prefer to use these acidic grapes for single variety wines, many have experimented with blending them with other fine varietals in order to balance out their combination of high acidity and light body. The results have often been truly special, and Sangiovese continues to impress today as much as it did centuries ago.

The hot, sunny climate supports quite a wide range of grapes, but the grape varietals most widely grown across this large region are Sangiovese and Vernaccia, both of which are used in the production of Tuscany's most distinctive red and white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and other imported grape varietals have also flourished there for over two hundred years, but it wasn't until the 1970's and the rise of the 'Super Tuscans' that they were widely used, when the fine wineries of the region began experimenting with Bordeaux style red wines to great effect.
