You wouldn't immediately associate sunny and landlocked Umbria as a land of Pinot Noir cultivation, but this effort from Castello della Sala presents a convincing argument for this particular pairing of grape and territory. The 2016 Pinot Nero opens to a beautiful ruby color and delivers aromas that are very characteristic of the variety, such as blue flower, wild cherry and orange peel. However, there is a distinctively Mediterranean or Italian signature to this wine with garden herb and rosemary essence. I remember the 2015 vintage being slightly more closed when I tasted that wine on release. This 2016 vintage sings loud straight from the start. ... More details

Elegant and finely balanced, this medium-bodied red layers creamy tannins with flavors of ripe black cherry, rose hip and licorice, underscored by woodsy spice and mineral elements. Drink now through 2026. 90 cases imported.
Winery
Produced since 1990 exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes, it is, in a certain sense, the "alter ego" of Cervaro: together they represent the two different expressions of the complex and refined soul of Castello della Sala. The 4 hectares of vineyard from which it is produced are located over 400 meters above sea level on calcareous soils rich in fossils with sands of sedimentary origin that date back to the Pliocene.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Umbria

The region of Umbria in central Italy is one of the country's most interesting wine regions, as well as being one of the most ancient. Umbria was home to many of the Roman's finest wines, and ancient civilizations such as the Romans were quick to recognize the potential a small region such as Umbria had, with its rolling, lush green hillsides, long hot summers and cooler ripening periods. Today, the region has a strong and characterful wine industry, with wineries in Umbria keen to experiment with blending together native grape varietals such as Sangiovese and Grechetto with imported Bordeaux varietals, in order to produce truly unique and exceedingly delicious wines. Tradition still plays an important role in Umbria, however, and wineries in the region are keen to use modern techniques alongside their time honored methods in order to produce the best wines possible.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
