Tua Rita's 2015 Syrah Per Sempre offers notable textural richness and depth, with a thread of whole cluster aromatic nuance that is woven throughout a core of intense dark fruit. Savory and floral notes continue to emerge with time in the glass. Creamy, silky tannins add to the wine's considerable appeal.

The first vintage of this 100% Syrah was in 2001. Stefano Frascolla tells the touching story of how, whenever his father-in-law was asked which was his favourite wine, he would say 'Syrah per sempre' - literally 'Syrah forever', but colloquially 'Syrah of course'. This is sweetly perfumed with juicy, vibrant acidity, lots of ripe, dark fruit, rich oak and concentrated liquorice flavours. A well rounded wine with a strong personality.

Tua Rita's Syrah is quickly reaching quality levels that could put it ahead of the estate's celebrated Merlot Redigaffi. In fact, I approached this tasting of warm-vintage releases with special curiosity and anticipation for this particular wine over the others (based on how well Syrah does in hot vintages). Ultimately, the 2015 Syrah Per Sempre took a little extra time to open, and the bouquet was initially shy and reticent. Slowly and surely, it started to deliver dark fruit intensity with smoke, cured meat and spicy tobacco. The wine performs beautifully in the palate, however, and a big part of my score was inspired by the excellence of the mouthfeel. It is nuanced, rich and velvety.

An opulent style, offering cherry, plum, tobacco and spice flavors. Broad and dense, featuring ample yet well-integrated tannins for support. The finish stays fresh and long, with toasted spice, mineral and tobacco notes. Syrah. Best from 2020 through 2028. 300 cases made, 20 cases imported.
Winery
Deep garnet in color, notes of ripe blackberries and plums complement undertones of figs, black pepper, and violets. On the palate, it is full-bodied with silky tannins and flavors that unfold into the lush finish.

Varietal: Syrah

Whilst there remains plenty of debate over which is the 'correct' name for the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, nobody is in any doubt about the influence and popularity this grape has had over recent decades. For centuries, this varietal has been used in single variety and blended wines in the regions of France it is most closely associated with, yet the 20th century saw it become one of the definitive grape varietals of New World red wines, where its big, robust character and spicy, berry-rich flavors proved to be a hit with international audiences. Today, Shiraz/Syrah is said to be the seventh most widely planted grape varietal in the world, and is used for a remarkably wide variety of quality red wines – including still, sparkling and fortified varieties.

Region: Tuscany

Tuscany is probably Italy's most important and widely respected wine region, with a history which stretches back almost three thousand years, and a set of fine grape varietals which produce some of the most delicious quality white and red wines in the world. Sangiovese and Vernaccia varietal grapes are grown all over this expansive region, and the way they are handled, aged and processed varies from town to town. The beautiful hot climate of Tuscany helps these grapes reach full ripeness, despite the fact the soil of the region is generally problematic for the vintners who work there. Despite this, there is a dedication to quality and flavor in Tuscany which is more or less unmatched anywhere else in Italy, and a great mix of strong tradition and willingness to experiment and think outside the box which has been a wonderful recipe for success in the region.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
