Rated 98 - A blend of 71.4% Sauvignon Blanc and 28.6% Semillon, the 2020 Haut-Brion Blanc races out with vibrant notes of lime juice, yuzu zest, and lemongrass, followed by suggestions of beeswax, wet slate, sea spray, and fennel seed. The medium-bodied palate offers a wonderfully satiny texture with beautifully balanced acidity cutting through the intense, tightly wound layers, finishing long and minerally. - The Wine Independent

The 2020 Château Haut-Brion Blanc is on another level and is clearly in the top handful of whites in the vintage. Extraordinary notes of white grapefruit, crushed citrus, earthy minerality, toasted nuts, and sappy flower notes define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, flawless, high, yet integrated acidity, and a liquid rock-like sense of minerality on the finish. White Bordeaux does not get much better, and this heavenly white deserves 4-6 years of bottle age and will evolve for decades.

Lots of sliced cooked apple, pear, flint, and matchstick aromas. Full-bodied and dense, yet agile and bright. Rich HB white with lemon curd. Oily and slightly heavy but comes through energetic at the end. 72% sauvignon and 28% semillon. Drink or hold.

Elderflower, white chocolate, pear, lemon blossom and orange zest - a nice mix of fresh fruits and floral scents. Bright, round and plump but focused too, this carries a lovely weight and intensity of flavour, it's not sharp or too woody with volume and balance. It's not shouting, more subtle and understated. The acidity is not that high 3.7pH so this doesn't have the immediate lift and joy you may be expecting but it's still tangy and vibrant with a round overall frame. Feels serious, and polished, this has been well worked with lovely nuances, a contemplative wine to think about. Still with some edges and tension too - the weight of Semillon playing against the sharpness of Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2020 Haut-Brion Blanc has a very classy bouquet, not quite as expressive as the La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, yet very detailed and mineral-driven, with hints of almond and a light hazelnut/fumé scents that loiter off-stage. The palate is very well balanced with a smooth texture, and wonderful depth. It exhibits a little more concentration than the La Mission with a sensual, grapefruit and lemon verbena finish tinged with saffron. Superb, but it deserves time in bottle.

The 2020 Haut-Brion Blanc also exhibits a deft touch of youthful reduction, unwinding in the glass to offer up aromas of nectarine, peach, grapefruit and Sauvignon botanicals, followed by a full-bodied, broad and fleshy palate that's layered and integrated, concluding with a delicately oak-inflected finish. This, too, has turned out nicely.

Varietal: White Bordeaux

The blended white wines of the Bordeaux region of France are famed worldwide for their complexity of flavor and superbly balanced characteristics. They are most commonly made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes, although French law dictates that Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac can all also be used in the production of these excellent wines. For centuries, the wineries of this region have been working and perfecting the skills necessarily to get the most flavor and positive characteristics of these grapes, and other wine producing countries in the world will no doubt continue to emulate these world leaders when it comes to selecting and blending said grape varietals.

Region: Bordeaux

Although most commonly associated with their superb blended red wines, the world-famous region of Bordeaux in France is responsible for a relatively wide array of wines, ranging from the sweet and viscous white wines of Sauternes, to the dry and acidic single variety white wines found all over the region. However, it is the red wines which regularly make the wine world's headlines, and have historically been regarded as the finest on earth. The secret to the region's success is the fact that the warm and humid climate, coupled with mineral rich clay and gravel based soils produces grapes of excellent quality. Wineries in this region have spent hundreds of years mastering the art of blending and oak aging in order to get the best results from each grape, and remain the envy of the world to this day.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
