As usual, Chapoutier's sélections parcellaires are stunning. The 2016 Ermitage de l'Oree from Les Murets' clay soils combines hints of honey and toast with tangerine zest and melon. It's 100% Marsanne, yet shows exuberant, nearly tropical flavors and absolutely no bitterness. It's full-bodied, completely mouth coating and rich, yet it finishes with zesty vitality and sherbet-like cleanliness. It should drink well for at least two decades. ... More details

Densely fruited, featuring yellow apple, peach, pear and mirabelle plum flavors, but lithe and pure as well, with light floral, quinine and salted butter notes rippling underneath. The very long finish shows latent energy and a lingering chamomile echo. Best from 2022 through 2040. 48 cases imported.

The 2016 Ermitage De L’Orée is also beautiful in the vintage and has a huge nose of buttered citrus, white flowers, orange blossom, and liquid rocks. Rich, full-bodied, beautifully pure and elegant, it has a seamless feel on the palate, terrific acidity, and a great finish. Coming all from the Les Murets lieu-dit and brought up in 15% new demi-muids, give this beauty 2-3 years of bottle age and it will shine for 2-3 decades.

Brilliant gold. Heady lemon curd, pear nectar, iodine and toasted brioche on the deeply perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering densely packed citrus and orchard fruit and sweet butter flavors that show outstanding clarity and minerally thrust. Delivers superb energy and real power on the clinging finish, which features a sexy floral quality and a touch of smoky minerality. This wine's balancing act of power and finesse is extremely impressive.

Wisps of tea leaves and caramelized honey swirl into freshly pressed apple and pear in this complex, elegant Marsanne. While intensely ripe and unctuous in mouthfeel, it's a remarkably pure sip brightened by soft tangerine acidity and a bristling mineral finish. Very impressive concentration, power, freshness and refinement. Aromas are in the dried-herb, lemon-pith and glazed-pear zone. The palate has intensity and depth with smooth, lemon-infused pears and white peaches. Gently savory finish. From organically grown grapes. Barrel sample.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosÃ© wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
