Opening to an exceptionally light ruby color, the 2019 Etna Rosso Contrada Pianodario is beautifully delicate and lean throughout. Personally, I love this style, and the folks at Tascante have nailed it on the head in this vintage that is, counterintuitively, known for concentrated wines, although you'd never say that while admiring the luminous hue on display here. There is good firmness and structure, achieved during fermentation on the skins and aging in traditional Slavonian oak casks. The bouquet is elegantly redolent of wild raspberry, bitter almond and blue flower. There are dusty volcanic notes as well. Only 5,700 bottles were made. Kudos! ... More details

A lovely nose of fresh red cherry, rose petal and grated nutmeg. Medium-to full-bodied with zesty acidity and silky tannins. Juicy. Well balanced and bright, with very good length and subtle concentration. Best after 2024.

Perfumed yet understated, the 2019 Etna Rosso Contrada Pianodario opens with a pretty mix of dried strawberries, roses and dusty stone. It's texturally deep, with a silken wave of tart wild berry fruits and citrus tones guided by brisk acidity. This finishes lightly structured with a cheek-puckering sour tinge and a bit coy, leaving only hints of mineral-tinged dried cherries to fade gradually.
Winery
Pianodario, one of the 4 Contrade in which we live and work, is located at an average elevation of 775 meters a.s.l., between Montelaguardia and Randazzo. It is an area of 7.91 hectares and 3.8 hectares are vineyards, characterized by terraces with dry-stone walls and with a degrading morphology from South to North with an average slope of 7%. The territory in which the vineyards are located is characterized by formations of volcanic origin between the ages of 15,000 and 4,000 years. It is possible to hypothesize a stratigraphic succession below the vineyards of Contrada Pianodario in which, under a covering of soil, there are lands between 15,000 and 4,000 years on much older lands (40,000-30,000 years).

Region: Sicily

Sicily has been an important wine region for thousands of years, with the ancient Greek settlers being among the first to discover its remarkable aptitude for viticulture. It isn't difficult to understand why they were impressed, and nor is it hard to understand why the island's wine industry continues to boom to this day. The climate on Sicily is ideal for wine production – sunshine beating down on the vineyards almost all year round, and a highly fertile volcanic soil produced from such magnificent peaks as Mount Etna. Sicily's vineyards are mostly used for the production of sweet dessert wines and fortified wines, such as the famous wine of Marsala, but the variety found across the island is impressive, and results in a great range of dry white and red wines packed full of exciting fruit flavors.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
