Deep mid-gold in colour, with a thick textured mist of scent hinting at grapes, oranges, honey and beeswax. It's weighty, sweet, rich, deep and chewy on the palate with ample waxy orange richness balanced by sustained, fruit-saturated acidity. Gratifying, diverting, generous. 2018-2020. Very ripe and heady nose of apricots and peach jam, straw, dried honeysuckle, caramel, mango puree and candied papaya. Somehow, it all remains fresh. Full and round on the palate. Medium-sweet to sweet with medium acidity. A dense, oily finish. One of the great sweet wines of South Africa. Drink now or hold.

We finish with the 2014 Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia, which shows identically to the bottle tasted in the Cape earlier this year. The bouquet bursts from the glass with marmalade, honeysuckle, orange rind and tropical fruit, all beautifully defined, if perhaps just a little waxier than I recall. The lively, viscous palate presents layers of fresh apricot, honey and orange zest, leading to a precise, vibrant finish. I love the chutzpah of this Vin de Constance, and though it will age, I do not begrudge anyone drinking it now.

Creamed persimmon, yellow apple, quince and mirabelle plum notes weave together seamlessly in this version, gilded with heather, honey and green tea accents. This is rich, but the brightness and a lovely bitter orange flash add detail on the finish. Muscat de Frontignan. Drink now through 2030. 3,000 cases made.

Pure gold in color. The nose presents an enticing encounter, followed by precise yet delicate aromas of white flowers, ripe citrus and touch of rosewater and almonds. The palate is in perfect harmony with a luscious mouthfeel. Flavors of creamy stone fruit, litchi, citrus zest and a lively spice abound creating an ideal balance. It concludes with a vibrant yet complex long finish.

Varietal: Muscat

Muscat varietal grapes are surely one of the most versatile wine grapes in the world. In dozens of countries across Europe and the New World, they are used for the production of everything from fine, fruity dry wines, to elegant sparkling examples and even dense, aromatic fortified wines of exceptional character and flavor It is a favorite with winemakers and vintners worldwide as a result of its hardiness and the high yields the vines routinely produce, and grows in a wide range of terroirs and climatic conditions. Such conditions have a considerable effect on the grapes themselves, which is part of the reason why Muscat wines are so varied when it comes to flavor, aroma and characteristics. Generally, Muscat wines are recognizable as a result of their strong, fresh and distinctly 'grapey' flavor, making them popular with those looking for a simple yet elegant wine easily paired with many different foods.

Region: Coastal Region

Coastal South Africa has long been recognized as a vitally important global wine region, and was probably the first 'New World' country to produce wines of an exceptionally high quality. Indeed, in the late 18th century, wines from in and around Cape Town were regarded as amongst the best wines on earth, and were adored for their exoticism and big, fruity flavors Today, the South African wine industry is booming, and wineries are appearing each year along the sun drenched and windy oceanic coastline. Many grape varietals are now grown in the region, however, Chenin Blanc remains the country's flagship varietal, with over eighteen percent of vineyards in the country used for this particular grape, closely followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Colombard.

Country: South Africa

With its hot, long summers and oceanic winds from both the west and the east, South Africa is something of a haven for a wide range of imported grape varietals. Since the mid-18th century, the country has been associated with some very fine wines made using complex and careful blending techniques, with one of the most famous and widely loved early examples being constructed from Pontac, Muscadel and Chenin Blanc varietals. Since those colonial days, the regions around Cape Town have proven again and again to be fantastic areas for producing interesting and delicious wines, with many of the best examples of Champagne style sparkling wines originating from these fertile lands. From the scorchingly hot regions of Orange Rivers, to the far cooler and temperate appellations in Walker Bay, South Africa has developed a booming wine industry responsible for many of the finest New World wines available anywhere across the globe.
