The 50 Year Old Rare Tawny is a symbol of Penfolds heritage, typifying collaboration and shared creative expression. Amongst the many individual components captured in this wine is the 1915 vintage, reported to be the foundation of the first Grandfather cask. Additionally, the 1940, 1945 vintages, the first two commercial releases of the Grandfather (in 1965 and 1969 respectively) and the first Great Grandfather release (1994). Incorporating the 1915 vintage component from Penfolds precious glass stock reserves means the Penfold 50 Year Old Rare Tawny carries a generic connection to the earliest recorded vintage of Penfolds Grandfather Tawny. This wine has been aged in small wood for an average of fifty years. Immediately upon release drinking optimally.

All over South Australia, wineries are making the most of their unique terroir and excellent climatic conditions in order to produce a wide variety of quality wines, made from a range of grape varietals. Whilst much of South Australia is dry and arid, complex and advanced irrigation systems have been set up to provide moisture to the vines. Other areas are relatively temperate and cool, with many of the most successful wineries producing extremely good wines being established in mountainous regions where the climate is considerably cooler. South Australia is split into six distinctive sub-regions, The Barossa Zone, Far North Zone, The Fleurieu Zone, Mount Lofty Ranges Zone and the Limestone Coast Zone, and all support several fine grape varietals in their rich soil and with plenty of year-round sunshine.

Elsewhere in the country, the Syrah grape (known locally as Shiraz) reigns supreme, as the long, hot summers allow these grapes to ripen fully and lend their intensely fruit-forward character to the ruby red Australian wines, which have such international appeal.
