The latest release of Cuvée Louise is one of the last of the deluxe cuvées to be released, indicative of the importance attached to both pre- and post-disgorgement chez Pommery. Louise, more formally known as Jeanne-Alexandrine Louise Pommery, was the founder of the House in the late 19th century. The 2005 is the child of a warm and sometimes balmy vintage, reflected in the glass by distinctive aromas of vanilla pod, gingerbread and soft spice. Exceptional grand cru provenance (two thirds Chardonnay from Avize and Cramant, and one third Pinot Noir from Aÿ) is underlined by the impressive concentration and longevity on the palate. This is a generous, playful wine, with hints of toffee and crème brûlée behind the honied autolytic core. Citrus peel, quince and walnut are also evidenced, deferential all to extended ageing and innate complexity. From the eye-caching bottle design all the way through to the rich mid-palate generosity, this a definitive and authoritative statement.

However, it is in the grape varietals which thrive in this region where the secrets to the Champagne's success can be found – the acidic, flavorful Chardonnay grapes meeting the characterful Pinot Noir varietal, and coming together to produce something wonderful in the bottle.
