Sporting one of the more fanciful and complicated Fio labels (and that’s saying something!), this wine’s name is a play on words, “cabinet” being the borrowed English word from which Kabinett was derived, and which for two centuries served as an approbative term for select German Rieslings, and sehr nett meaning “very nice.” As with the corresponding 2016, the source is early pickings from high-elevation Piesport sites, the wine received nearly 11 months’ élevage, and it’s delicate with moderate sweetness. Piquantly pit-inflected white peach mingles on the nose with passion fruit and zesty grapefruit. The palate impression, while alcoholically lightweight, is surprisingly dense. Zest and pit inflections serve for invigoration, while tangy citrus along with saline suffusion supply refreshment and salivary stimulation on a satisfyingly lingering finish, though one lacking the vintage 2016 rendition’s striking clarity and sense of active mineral impingement.

We have to have one more classic Mosel style wine classic wine in the portfolio,” says Marco. “This is our super top Mosel; a unique wine, no one can copy.” This is a “Cabi Very Nice” an old-fashioned Kabinett, harvested early with low alcohol and high acidity aged in a barrel with native ferment. Marco says, “It’s our repair wine. Although they originated in Germany's beautiful Rhine Valley, the Riesling grape soon spread around the world, where it thrives in many countries with a colder climate which can support this pale and unique grapes. Riesling grapes are considered one of the finest varietals on earth, capable of expressing fascinating features of the soil type they are grown on, resulting in some highly interesting wines with plenty to offer those who are looking for something different. Riesling grapes are also noted for their aromas, which tend to be highly perfumed, floral and often with smoky notes accentuating their unusual flavor Because this was always the predominant grape grown in Germany and other such countries, Riesling wineries have always been keen to experiment with its range. This has resulted in dry white wines, sparkling wines, semi sweet wines and several others, but the finest examples are usually considered to be the Riesling dessert wines. These are occasionally made with unusual processes, including the 'eiswine' method, in which the grapes are allowed to freeze in the early frosts, or by allowing the development of 'noble rot', which withers the grapes and results in some truly spectacular and unusual flavors.

Whilst Germany continues to produce a relatively large amount of dessert wine, the wineries of the south of the country have reverted their attention to the production of drier, more elegant wines which really make the most of the fine grape varieties which flourish there. Many of the wineries dealing primarily with the excellent Riesling grapes have produced some truly exceptional dry and semi-sweet wines over the past few years, and it seems the world has finally woken up and noticed the extremely high quality of the distinctive produce coming out of Germany today.
