Varietal: Semillon
Semillon grapes are easily recognizable from their pale and golden color, which often takes on a pinkish hue when ripened in hot climates. These grapes produce a wide range of excellent wines, from crisp, dry and citrus flavored still white wines, to more sweeter varieties. Semillon is one of the fine white grape varietals used in the production of Bordeaux white wines, and it is known for having a particular affinity for oak, in which it ages fantastically. At one point, Semillon was wildly popular, and was grown in abundance all over Europe and the New World. It is highly popular with wineries seeking a white wine grape which grows quickly and easily, with a high resistance to disease and the ability to produce high yields.

South Africa is a fascinating country for wine, and the coastal regions at the very tip of the African continent are widely regarded as being one of the finest wine regions in the world. It isn't difficult to understand why the early European settlers in the 17th century saw such potential for viticulture in the area; the heat is fantastic, the summer days wonderfully long, the soil rich in minerals, and the strong winds coming from the ocean provide much needed coolness in which the grapes could ripen slowly and fully. As such, many European grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and others have been given time to flourish in South Africa, allowing the country to develop a diverse group of wine types which are proving increasingly popular around the world.
