The 2019 The Virgilius Viognier is generally accepted as being one of the best Viogniers in the country (there are a handful of wines in this group), and it manages a range of briny acidity and chalky phenolics balanced on a fulcrum of sweet summer apricot, white flowers and green apples. Really smart.

Winery
Pale gold with green highlights. Intense aromas of apricots, cardamom, white pepper and fresh ginger. Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral, sourdough-like texture, apricots and almond savoriness. It is complex while at the same time shows purity and restraint, that will unwind slowly in the glass and take the imbiber on a sensory journey.

Varietal: Viognier

The green skinned grapes of the Viognier varietal are a true French classic, and are the only grape varietal allowed to be used in certain fine wines produced in the Rhone region. Their highly aromatic qualities are prized by wineries and wine drinkers alike, and are widely admired for their extremely floral nose which gives an impression of sweetness, despite these wines almost always being very dry. The precise origins of the Viognier grape are lost in time, but today they can still be found growing in many regions of France, as well as in several countries of the New World. Their floral aromas and fruit-forward flavors make them a favorite for those seeking an elegant wine, and despite the grapes being notoriously difficult to grow, vintners persevere with them, as they know the results are rarely less than spectacular.

The Barossa Valley in Australia is home to the country's finest vineyards, and has been the premier wine region of Australia for several decades now. First established by German settlers in the late 19th century, Barossa Valley suffered a drop in reputation in the 1950s and 60s, with most of their produce being used only for blending purposes. Thanks to the vision and ambition of several unique and interesting wineries which decided to make Barossa their home, the reputation of this excellent region was restored over the past four decades due to the excellence of the produce coming out of Barossa, and the efforts made to demonstrate the real qualities of Australia's Shiraz wines. Today, a wide range of grape varietals are grown on the fine soil and in the temperate climate of Barossa, and they are enjoyed across the globe.

Combine this with the experimental and daring approach Australian wineries have in regards to wine production, and it becomes clear why Australia has relatively quickly become something of a world leader when it come to exporting their produce to Europe and America. The Shiraz and Chardonnay grape varietals have produced the most successful and broadly appreciated results over the decades, however, in more recent years wineries have begun experimenting with a much wider range of grape varietals, demonstrating how Australian wineries are continuing to adapt and develop alongside international palates.
