#76 TOP 100 WINES OF SOUTH AFRICA 2022. Rather inviting aromas of red cherries, baked strawberries and grated nutmeg. Medium-bodied with silky fine tannins. Perfumed and expressive on the palate. Rather textural and deep. Not rich but very intense. A serious cinsault that is delicious now but will age very nicely. From vines planted in 1900, which makes them the oldest red wine vines in South Africa. Drink or hold. ... More details

The 2020 Cinsault Wellington Old Vine, vines officially planted in 1900, is 100% whole cluster crushed with a shorter maceration of around two weeks compared to the Syrah, matured for one year in 500-litre barrels, blended, then another year in barrel. (There was no 2019 as 90% of the fruit was stolen on the vine!) It has an open knit bouquet with wild strawberry, wilted rose petals and light loamy scents. The palate is well balanced with red cherry, crushed strawberry and a light grip with a touch of black pepper on the finish. Lovely.

Bursting with whole-cluster aromatics, the 2020 Leeu Passant Wellington Cinsault is juicy and fresh and seduces with crunchy red fruit. The wine is bright and juicy with a nimble frame and delightful succulent acidity that will remain food friendly for years to come. Marked with 12.5% alcohol, this delightful bottle of Cinsault will tickle your palate and keep you coming back for more. 1,930 bottles were filled after the wine rested for 20 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. Give it a try!
Winery
This aromatic wine has an alluring and complex nose suggesting roses, cranberries, cherries, spice and a hint of thyme. The pallet is fresh and silky textured, with notes of orange peel, rhubarb, maraschino cherries, pink peppercorns and loves. Fine tannins give great structure to the wine. Best served at 16-18°C.

Region: Coastal Region

South Africa is a fascinating country for wine, and the coastal regions at the very tip of the African continent are widely regarded as being one of the finest wine regions in the world. It isn't difficult to understand why the early European settlers in the 17th century saw such potential for viticulture in the area; the heat is fantastic, the summer days wonderfully long, the soil rich in minerals, and the strong winds coming from the ocean provide much needed coolness in which the grapes could ripen slowly and fully. Over time, South Africa's coastal regions became covered in strong, healthy vineyards, and today, the wine industry of the region is booming. The past few decades have seen wineries experimenting with a wide range of grape varietals, and also producing fortified wines and sparkling wines of great character alongside their classic varieties.

Country: South Africa

Situated on the very tip of the African continent, South Africa has proved itself over three centuries to be an ideal location for producing a wide range of wines. Benefiting from something not dissimilar to a Mediterranean climate, with long, hot summers complemented by both Atlantic and Indian Ocean winds, the grapes which grow on the valleys, mountainsides and plains of this fascinating country can ripen to their fullest capacity, producing wines packed full of fruity flavors and an array of interesting and enticing aromas. As a former colony, South Africa has long since been home to a range of different nationalities, who each brought something of their wine culture with them. As such, many European grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and others have been given time to flourish in South Africa, allowing the country to develop a diverse group of wine types which are proving increasingly popular around the world.
