Juicy and energetic in feel, this brims with cherry, blackberry and plum compote flavors, backed by red licorice, briar and chocolate notes. The long finish reveals a lush coating around an inner cable of refined tannins. Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Best from 2035 through 2055. 1,100 cases made, 200 cases imported. ... Dense and layered with very ripe fruit and beautiful blueberry and blackberry character. Medium sweet. Driven and finely textured. Beautiful wine all around.

The 2017 Vintage Port is mostly Touriga Nacional (70%), with the rest Touriga Franca, aged for 20 months in neutral tonels. It comes in with 89 grams of residual sugar. This was in bottle only a couple of weeks when tasted. This seems rich and fruity on opening, but not much more. Its fruit is just delicious, but I didn't get the sense of structure I saw from the 2016 last year. Yet, with two hours of air in a glass, this really blossomed, showing fine power, more focus and a serious backbone to go with its ripe fruit. This is another fine Romaneira, but I'm not sure yet that it exceeds the performance of the fine 2016. We will have to see how that goes in time and over the years.

Dense, ripe and already open, this is a concentrated wine that has balanced tannins and juicy black currant fruits. Its richness is tempered by the fresh, dry streak of acidity and tannins. Drink from 2028.

Romaneira is co-owned by Christian Seely, managing director of Quinta do Noval, and is located just upstream on the north bank of the Douro. It's lifted and aromatic on the nose with a lovely herbal, green tea character, leading to a palate of very pure black cherry fruit and a touch of fir, immediately appealing and with lovely definition. It has spicy, sinewy tannins and is lighter than some of its peers but makes up for this with its immediacy and beauty. One for the medium term.
Winery
COLOR: Deep purple-ruby color. NOSE: Superb aromatic personality with abundant spice and wild Duoro flower notes. FLAVOR: Fig, mint, black plum, and dark chocolate flavors explode in the mouth. Sweet, full-bodied, with a great round tannic structure and balance that ends in a very long and lingering finish.

Region: Porto

Porto has a history which stretches back centuries, and involves empires, riches, and the discovery of new countries and civilisations. Today, the city and the region which surrounds it is perhaps best known for wine, and in particular, the tawny colored, aromatic and delicious Port wines which have been wildly popular since the 18th century. The region Porto is situated in, the Douro wine region of Portugal, is one of the oldest protected wine regions in the world, and is widely considered to be one of the finest places in Europe for viticulture. Indeed, the area around Porto supports an astonishing number of native and imported grape varietals, although by far the most common grapes found flourishing on the valley sides are Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tempranillo, Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional – all grapes most commonly used for Port wine production.

Country: Portugal

Benefiting from both the hot, dry Iberian climate as well as brisk Atlantic winds, Portugal is a perfectly situated country for vineyard cultivation and wine production. With a wine making history which stretches back thousands of years, it comes as little surprise that wine plays an important role in the cultural identity and practices of the country. The Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Greeks and the Romans all had a hand in forming Portugal as an important center for wine production, and over the millennia, this resulted in each region of this beautiful part of Europe producing its own distinctive wines easily identifiable and separate from neighboring Spain's. Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.
