A stunning Chateauneuf with stacks of ripe blackberry fruit, generous body and concentrated fine tannins. Together with the pronounced minerality, they give this a stunning velvety texture right through the remarkably long intense finish for the challenging 2021 vintage. From field blend vineyards growing on 50% galet cobblestone soil and 50% sandy soil. Grenache is dominant, followed by syrah, but mourvedre, counoise and vaccarese also play an important role. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. ... More details

Solitude's 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape is wonderfully creamy, supple and approachable, with a long, plush finish. An assemblage of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% other varieties, it seamlessly marries ripe cherries, dusty earth and dried spices on the nose, giving it even more immediate appeal. Impressive.

A suave, lush version, featuring a bright beam of cassis and boysenberry flavors. There's good energy and acidity, with cashmere-fine tannins edged in graphite. A warm robe of gently toasty apple wood draws out the attractive, medium-length finish. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Counoise. Drink now through 2032. 8,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

The classic cuvée here, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape is rock solid, with bright and juicy cherry and berry fruits, medium body, soft, integrated tannins, and classic notes of Provençal garrigue, lavender, and spices. It plays in the elegant, pretty, focused style of the vintage and will keep for 7-8 years. The classic Cuvée is 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties, with the elevage mostly in concrete but with 10% in new barrels.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
