I loved the 2017 Saint Joseph Vignes De L'Hospice from barrel and it doesn't disappoint from bottle. Revealing a deep ruby/plum color as well as spicy, exotic notes of crème de cassis, toasted spice, incense, barbecue smoke, and acacia flowers, this beauty has subtle background oak, full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It offers pleasure even today yet will be at its best in 4-5 years and keep for two decades.

A polished and toasty style, with vanilla bean and singed mesquite accents draped over a core of very substantial dark cherry and plum fruit. Fruitcake and licorice frame the finish, with a buried iron note to keep it honest. Really packed throughout. Best from 2022 through 2035. 125 cases imported.

Disappointing only in the context of other recent vintages, the 2017 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice is still a fine wine. It comes across as plush and a bit jammy, with vanilla-accented cherry and raspberry shadings. Medium to full-bodied and richly textured, at the moment it just lacks that little bit of extra spark shown by the 2016 and 2018.

Region: Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
