A tempting nose with minerals and flowers on top of the spiced dark cherries, together with some mussels, minerals and a hint of iodine. Full-bodied, tight and juicy with a mineral palate. Very elegant, yet fruit-expressive. Lots of cherries in the long, pristine finish. Drink or hold.

Fiore del Vento hails from a particularly stony, calcareous site at 450 to 500 metres above sea level. Of Corte Pavone’s three cru offerings in 2017, it seems to be the most expressive of site rather than winemaking. The nose is discreet at first with a whiff of cedar forest. Captivating truffle, dusty earth and lavender scents join in. Exuberant and plentiful in fruit, it sports ripe and robust tannins that cling to the palate. The generous 15% alcohol is absorbed into its layers and mineral notes linger persistently.
Winery
Bright ruby red with garnet rim. The nose is very intense and rich–luscious aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, and plums, with a bit of cocoa in the background. Full and round at first taste; mid-palate it opens up, showing aromas of dark berries, intense fruit, and a lot of velvety tannins. Complex wine with long and full finish.

Varietal: Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively – full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Region: Tuscany

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
