The 2021 Syrah Unanswered Prayers appears to be ever so slightly more successful than the Grenache (which, given the differences in the vintage, certainly makes sense). It has an incredibly pure, flawlessly balanced, full-bodied style to go with perfumed aromatics of darker berry fruits, ground pepper, smoked game, and iron. Sublime, subtle, earthy notes of wild game and truffles that open into milk chocolate and black figs. It's an imposing, formidable Syrah (83%, with 4.7% each of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Petite Sirah) sourced from the Bien Nacido, Rancho Boa Vista and Sanford & Benedict vineyards, yet it's graceful and fragrant, too. Produced with 35% whole clusters and aged 20 months in French oak (63% new), it's a spicy, deeply satisfying wine with a finish that melds into soft, satin-edged tannins.

I tasted the 2021 Syrah Unanswered Prayers on July 7, 2023, a few days before it was due to be bottled. It comes from the Bien Nacido, Rancho Boa Vista and Sanford & Benedict Vineyards. The blend includes 4.7% Grenache, 4.7% Mourvèdre, 4.7% Petite Sirah and 2.9% white wine. It was vinified using 35% whole clusters and matured for 20 months in 63% new French oak. Opaque ruby-purple, it's bursting with youthfully broody scents of blueberry preserves, blackcurrant, lavender, tar, game meats and peppermint patty. Full-bodied, powerful yet balanced, the palate features concentrated floral fruit, detailed, velvety tannins and seamless acidity that carries on through the shimmery finish. 437 cases are projected. A concentrated and expressive syrah offering blackberries, plums, dark chocolate, black peppercorns and hints of overturned earth. Deep and bold with a full body and dense but very polished and fine tannins that almost melt in the mouth, ending with a chocolatey, textural aftertaste. Richness and intensity that comes with harmony and poise. Drink or hold.

The region itself is renowned for producing high quality and flavorful red wines, commonly made from classic French grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon. However, recent years have seen the wineries of Santa Barbara eager to experiment, and today several different red and white wine grapes are growing well in this beautiful region.
