Made from a blend of 51% Chardonnay and 49% Pinot Noir, the NV Brut begins with bright citrus tones of lemon peel, green and yellow apple skin and elements of citrus blossom and underripe pineapple. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively and crisp with energetic acidity and a bright, incredibly versatile mouthfeel. The Brut ends with a delightful and lingering finish that overdelivers at this price point. For twenty bucks, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better sparkler—until you try the Brut Rosé. 600,000 bottles were filled after spending 15 to 18 months on the lees before disgorgement. Graham Beck remains one of the most recognizable producers of Méthode Cap Classique and it is no wonder this particular bottling has earned the nickname the “President’s Choice,” as it was served at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration and Barack Obama’s presidential victory.

A very pretty nose of fresh flowers, citrus and creamy toast leads into a balanced, rich Chardonnay-like character on the palate. Minerally, clean, fresh but serious, this wine is food-friendly and elegant. (Editors’ Choice)

A pretty sparkler, featuring notes of brioche and salted butter and hints of nectarine. Very well-balanced, this shows some complexity and delivers lots of immediate pleasure. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now. 5,000 cases imported.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Country: South Africa

With its hot, long summers and oceanic winds from both the west and the east, South Africa is something of a haven for a wide range of imported grape varietals. Since the mid-18th century, the country has been associated with some very fine wines made using complex and careful blending techniques, with one of the most famous and widely loved early examples being constructed from Pontac, Muscadel and Chenin Blanc varietals. Since those colonial days, the regions around Cape Town have proven again and again to be fantastic areas for producing interesting and delicious wines, with many of the best examples of Champagne style sparkling wines originating from these fertile lands. From the scorchingly hot regions of Orange Rivers, to the far cooler and temperate appellations in Walker Bay, South Africa has developed a booming wine industry responsible for many of the finest New World wines available anywhere across the globe.
