The 2022 Syrah from Swartland comes from mostly shale and schist soils, 25% on granite soils, using 75% whole cluster fruit (the shale using submerged cap during fermentation). Aged in 2,000-liter Austrian oak, this leans more towards red berries, with touches of flint and white pepper with a hint of garrigues coming through with aeration. The medium-bodied palate has finely sculpted tannins. There's a lovely symmetry and focus here, a gentle but insistent grip with the whole bunches imparting irresistible peppery notes towards the finish. Superb. ... More details

So much syrah character here with dark cherries, violets and plenty of white pepper. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Lively, vibrant and agile on the palate with plenty of peppercorns giving it lift. Pure and authentic. Focused finish with length. Drink or hold.

• Syrah. • Sourced from 3 sites in the Swartland: bush vines situated on the NW foothills of the Paardeberg, on Jakkalsfontein farm, North facing bush vines located in the heart of the Swartland, and the dominant source is from the Western foot of the Kasteelberg. • Ancient free-draining decomposed granite soils, Malmesbury shale, ferricrete (decomposed granite with iron), and schist. • Hand harvested. • 60-75% of the fruit was fermented as whole clusters, depending on the parcel. • Fermented with indigenous yeast in tulip-shaped concrete fermenters and two 1000-liter conical oak vats, with pump-overs being limited to a maximum of two per day. • Aged for 11 months in 2000L Austrian oak vats. • Bottled unfined.

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines.
