The 2019 Syrah on Shale The Landscape Series has a well-defined bouquet of copious red berry fruit laced with clove, bay leaf and subtle earthy tones (reminding me of Mullineux in many ways). The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced, with supple tannins and a touch of gaminess toward the elegant finish. White pepper lingers on the aftertaste. Delicious. ... More details

A harmonious red, offering rich notes of bitter cherry, warm fig and a savory touch of fleshy, herbal green olive, wrapped around sinewy tannins and a streak of stony minerality. Reveals pretty hints of milled white pepper and dried flowers on the finish. Drink now through 2029. 274 cases made, 50 cases imported.
Winery
A complex and alluring vintage that combines the savouriness of truffles, wet earth and thyme with black cherries and baked rhubarb. Grippy tannins and a salted liquorice aftertaste add a moreish texture to the finish.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Country: South Africa

As geographically diverse country, with everything from lush green valleys to areas of arid desert, mountainsides and river estuaries, South Africa unsurprisingly produces a huge range of excellent wines. Regions such as the Breede River Valley consistently impress with their Semillon wines and the lush, fruity Ruby Cabernets grown and processed here, and the cooler region of Overberg is attracting much attention as a result of their silky Pinot Noir bottles. However, all over the oceanic tip of this fascinating country, traditional methods dating back over three hundred years are combining with modern technologies to produce some of the finest examples of New World wines to be found anywhere on the globe.
