The wine that was intended to be called Montals is now 2018 Guix Vermell, as the Montals name was already registered. It comes from a vineyard located next to Les Manyes in Priorat, a vineyard that they purchased together with Les Manyes (from Terroir al Limit). This is the first vineyard as you cross from Priorat into Montsant, so the soils and climate are basically the same. The vines were planted some 60 years ago at some 800 meters in altitude, and they do a selection of the best parts from the four hectares they own there. The wine fermented and matured in clay amphorae, with a short élevage of six months and then was put into bottle. There are notes of raspberries, red cherries, acid strawberry, violets and spices; it's very balanced and insinuating, open and pure, elegant and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. I tasted this next to the 2016 Les Manyes from Terroir al Limit, and the wines are very different; they have completely different aromas, and there is more depth and complexity in the wine from Priorat. But this is really superb, and it's still very young and should also develop in bottle. 1,600 bottles produced. ... More details

This is a crazy wine with such depth and compact character with blue fruit and shaved graphite. Full to medium body. Very complex and complete with excellent texture. Red chilies and rust. Extremely long and creamy with excellent structure. Pure garnacha.
Winery
The refined beauty of this dry red is less taste than experience. A wild ride of tension, depth and complexity. The lithe aromas and flavors move like a dancer across the nose and palate from deep red and blue fruit to stone to spice with a consistent velvety texture. Yet that seems almost secondary to the nearly transcendental balance and inner quiet. The wine grew from respect for the land and the culture. It belongs to a place and a time, and as such is a true mirror for the power, mystery and beauty of its region.

green grapes

Varietal: Grenache

For many centuries now, vintners in the dry and arid regions of Europe have been growing the purple skinned fruits of the Grenache vines for use in a wide range of different wines. Their influence and popularity led to them being planted all over the New World in any region with the correct climatic conditions for them to thrive in, away from the damp or wet weather which causes this particular varietal to very easily rot. Grenache grapes are prized by many as a result of their spicy berry flavors, and the fact that they have a relatively high alcohol content in the bottle. This has led to them being often used as a blending grape, although single variety bottles are also common and make the most of their light body and interesting, rich flavors

Region: Cataluna

The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.
