Brilliant ruby-red. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes red fruit preserves, smoky minerals, exotic spices and candied flowers that show excellent clarity. Sappy, alluringly sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy black raspberry, cherry liqueur, spicecake flavors and a suave floral undertone. Plays richness off of energy adroitly and shows no rough edges. The nose of the showy red 2016 La Serra Negre reminded me of wild blackberries and brambles, very fruit-driven, with an almost complete absence of oak notes. It's a blend of 60% Cariñena with 40% Garnacha from old vines. It's ripe and a little heady, clean and with a soft palate with moderate acidity. 3,000 bottles were filled in February 2018.

This plush red shows depth and focus, with black cherry and plum flavors deepened by loamy earth, cocoa and graphite notes. Features well-integrated tannins and just enough acidity for balance. Drink now through 2026. 28 cases imported.

The old Garnatxa and Carinyena vines at the La Serra estate produce powerful and concentrated grapes which create an intense wine packed with black fruit, such as ripe cherries, and a refreshing herbal sensation with notes of coffee and toffee. The freshness of old Carinyena embellished with mineral touches stands out in the mouth. A lively and deep wine.

As one of the most important wine regions in Spain, and indeed in Europe, Catalunya has been producing fine wines for an astonishing length of time. Indeed, there is much archaeological evidence to suggest that grapevines were being cultivated in ancient Catalan vineyards in pre-Roman times, and possibly even before the Pheonician traders first set out to plant vines in many western European countries. Whilst Catalunya is possibly best known for its famous sparkling Cava wines, the two hundred or so wineries in the region actually produce a wide range of red and white still wines, made from plenty of different imported and native grape varietals. As such, Catalunya is a fascinating region for any wine lover, with plenty of enticing, quintessentially Spanish flavors and aromas to discover.
