I think the 2013 Espectacle del Montsant suffered when tasted next to its 'cousins' from Clos Mogador. This pure Garnacha from old vines in the village of La Figuera in Montsant showed a waterfall of red fruit and violets with subtle touches of spices in an elegant way. The palate is pure silk, quite fruit-driven with moderate acidity and silky tannins, but somehow I was expecting a little more tension and spark; I found it a little shy and not as vibrant as one would wish in a vintage like 2013. I mean, it's delicious and elegant, really pleasant, but the bar had been set too high already. 5,600 bottles produced.

I think the 2013 Espectacle del Montsant suffered when tasted next to its 'cousins' from Clos Mogador. The palate is pure silk, quite fruit-driven with moderate acidity and silky tannins, but somehow I was expecting a little more tension and spark; I found it a little shy and not as vibrant as one would wish in a vintage like 2013. I mean, it's delicious and elegant, really pleasant, but the bar had been set too high already. 5,600 bottles produced.

Varietal: Grenache

Grenache grapes have long been cultivated in various parts of Europe, and are noted for being particularly successful in arid regions which are both hot and very dry. As such, they are ideal for many New World countries, and have quickly established themselves as one of the most widely grown red wine grape varietals in the world. The Grenache grape is easily identifiable by its purple skin, and tightly hanging bunches which grow quite rigorously in the correct conditions. They are most commonly associated with light bodied wines, with little tannins or acidity, yet quite a high alcohol content. The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.
