"Wolves is like other celebrity booze brands in that it’s pretty pricey — Wolves Lot One, its first in its Malted Barley series of American single malts, is selling for a suggested retail price of $289. Unlike other celeb brands, however, the liquid in the bottle is worth your time and cash. Lot One is so named because it’s the first in a series of whiskeys distilled in 8-12 barrel lots by Karakasevic at Charbay as far back as 2011, using an old-school French alembic pot still. The Lot One batch, a dozen barrels strong, was distilled in 2015. Eleven of the 12 were married together to make this blend, while the twelfth was held back for a single barrel expression. The barrels are new American oak, sourced from a Napa Valley cooperage that typically makes them for wineries, employing a variety of treatments ranging from light toasting to #3 char. American single malt whiskey is a pretty hot topic lately, in part because the TTB is poised to make it an official category, complete with standards and regulations. That doesn’t mean I drink it regularly, at least not voluntarily. Nor does anyone I know. It’s gotten a lot better in the last decade or so, but when I want American whiskey, I’m usually jonesing for bourbon or rye. That said, Lot One is spectacular, with light oak, vanilla, and honey notes on the nose and rich caramel, maple syrup, orange zest and cereal on the palate. The mouthfeel is gorgeous, velvety and, dare I say it, smooth. At 55% ABV, it’s insanely easy to drink — to add a drop of water would be a crime. It’s one of the rare American single malts that I actively look forward to drinking. There are 375 six-pack cases of Lot One available, which means that’s, um... not a lot of bottles." - Forbes

Overview
Lot One of the Malted Barley Series is Wolves’ first Single Malt expression. These 12 barrels were distilled in 2015 in an antique alambic brandy still, from two-row pale malted barley, and fermented with California Ale yeast. A range of oak treatments from light toast to Char 3, along with alternating Hungarian and American heads, were applied across the 12 barrels. 11 of the 12 barrels were blended together and bottled at 110 proof for this expression. This is very much a "beer drinker’s whiskey." It’s extremely heavy on the malt influence, yeasty, and has banana notes that remind me of unfiltered wheat beer. Under this overarching profile lies some nice subtlety including candied sweetness, some tart fruit, and just a hint of spice. I'm pretty picky when it comes to beer so the overt "beerness" of this whiskey doesn't fully jive with me but I can see how this would be a smash hit for those that love beer and whiskey equally. Hats off to Wolves for making a unique single malt with a flavor profile I've never encountered before. We need more variety out there!

Region: California

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Country: United States

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere. Not even in the Old World are there such fertile valleys, made ideal for vine cultivation by the blazing sunshine, long, hot summers and oceanic breezes. As such, it comes as little surprise that today more than eighty-nine percent of United States wines are grown in the valleys and on the mountainsides of California, where arguably some of the finest produce in the world is found. However, American wine does not begin and end with California, and due to the vast size of the country and the incredible range of terrains and climates found within the United States, there is probably no other country on earth which produces such a massive diversity of wines. From ice wines in the northern states, to sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fortified wines, reds, whites, rosés and more, the United States has endless surprises in store for lovers of New World wines.
