Set to be released in August 2023, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Clone 8 is big and juicy with seductive aromas of blackberry compote, dusty flowers and elegant oak spices. Full-bodied with generous layers and a robust and luxurious mouthfeel, the Cabernet reveals a fantastic and dusty edge that is not overdone yet walks the line of power and precision. Offering generous layers of resinous purple flowers that will indeed be a juggernaut and show better in time, the wine continues with a tight, complex and ever-evolving finish where I can see bumping the score up one more point in the coming years once it’s had time to come together. It’s an absolutely stellar expression of Galitzine Cabernet Sauvignon, but be patient with this one. The wine rested in 100% new French oak for 21 months. 1,275 cases were produced. ... More details

What a deep core of black fruit here. Concentrated notes of blackcurrants, thyme, bay leaves, cloves, bitter chocolate and graphite here, with wet earth and stony minerality. Black cherries and salty olives, too. Full-bodied and broad, with generous horizontal layers that interweave with firm and polished tannins. Fantastic density and focus that pulls you in. Drink after 2025.

Aromas of balsamic, spice, plum and dried strawberry. Medium to full body with round and fine tannins showing polish and energy. Salty. Savory and subtle fruit. 7.6 hectares. Very high calcium-based soils. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Screw cap.

Sage and black liquorice aromatics are met with notes of crushed basalt, a signature of Red Mountain, where the Galitzine Vineyard sits amongst the AVA's royalty in terms of vineyard sites. This is 100% Clone 8 Cabernet. The palate is a delicious melange of red and blue fruits, raspberries and mint, and cocoa nibs lead the wine down a road of depth and complexity balanced with a savoury, herbaceous elegance. Delicious.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Since their conception in 18th century France, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have flourished across the Old and New Worlds and have changed the way we think about red wine forever. Their sharp and astringent nature has a wonderful ability to mellow and round with age, and when helped by being blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc varietals – as is done in Bordeaux and elsewhere – the results can be truly remarkable. What is most special about Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is the fact that they have a true affinity for oak, and when aged in barrels made of this fragrant wood, the wine which comes out of them a few years later holds an amazing array of flavors and aromas, making Cabernet Sauvignon based wines some of the most memorable in the world. Single variety bottles from the New World made from this grape are also increasing in popularity, as the strong flavors and full-bodied nature of these wines is a great match for many global cuisines.

Region: Washington State

The popularity of fine red wines, made with classic Old World grape varietals, has continued to increase in the United States over the past few decades. Washington state has consistently impressed with their red wine grape varietals, and many of the most popular American red wines of the past twenty years have come from this unique and interesting state with its two distinct regions. The vast majority of Washington's wines come from the arid eastern half of the state, a semi-desert irrigated by the rivers which run through the area, with considerably fewer wineries found in the wetter western side. Washington is renowned for the production of strong, fruit-forward wines made with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and other varietals, with many fine white wines being produced there also.

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.
