The NV Perpetual Reserve Sparkling from Rhys blends Anderson Valley's Bearwallow Vineyard and Mt. Pajaro Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It contains 50% current vintage—2020—and 50% reserve wines dating to 2016. The nose is lovely, evoking yellow orchard fruits, fresh lilies and crushed hazelnuts. Medium-bodied and with polished yet nervy concentration and fine mousse, this is a promising start to Rhys's sparkling wine program, which, given the heights they've achieved elsewhere, is a very exciting project indeed. ... Winery
This multi-vintage sparkler takes advantage of a continual reserve wine made from select lots of wine each vintage. When the blend is assembled each year, the reserved wine from prior vintages is mixed with the base wine from the current vintage. Half of this blend is bottled as the new Perpetual Reserve while the remainder goes back to age until the next vintage. Aging two years on the lees preserves the freshness of the current vintage and the inclusion of the reserve wine lends the complexity of age. Expect a bright and energetic wine with classic sparkling characteristics of white and yellow fruit, citrus peel, and a touch of brioche. The low dosage highlights the terrific energy and vibrant acidity, making this a sparkling wine that is both immediately approachable and ageworthy.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

There are few areas in the world with a reputation quite as famous and respected as that of Champagne in France, and almost every wine region on earth has imitated or has been influenced by the careful process mastered by the wineries of Champagne. However, it is in the grape varietals which thrive in this region where the secrets to the Champagne's success can be found – the acidic, flavorful Chardonnay grapes meeting the characterful Pinot Noir varietal, and coming together to produce something wonderful in the bottle. There are actually seven varietals allowed by French wine law for the production of Champagne wines, all of which are used by wineries to accentuate each others finest points and maintain the reputation of this very special region, the home to some extremely high quality grapes.

Region: California

When it comes to New World wine regions, it is widely agreed that many of the finest wines are grown and produced in California. The long stretches of coastline and the valleys and mountainsides which come off them are ideal areas for vine cultivation, and for over a century now, wineries have found a perfect home in the hot, dry state, with many of the wines produced here going on to reach world class status. The state is greatly helped by the brisk oceanic winds which cool the otherwise hot and dry vineyards, which hold mineral rich soils covering vast areas and featuring many established wineries. The state is split into four main regions, the largest by far being the central valley which stretches over three hundred miles in length.

Country: United States

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere. Not even in the Old World are there such fertile valleys, made ideal for vine cultivation by the blazing sunshine, long, hot summers and oceanic breezes. As such, it comes as little surprise that today more than eighty-nine percent of United States wines are grown in the valleys and on the mountainsides of California, where arguably some of the finest produce in the world is found. However, American wine does not begin and end with California, and due to the vast size of the country and the incredible range of terrains and climates found within the United States, there is probably no other country on earth which produces such a massive diversity of wines. From ice wines in the northern states, to sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fortified wines, reds, whites, rosés and more, the United States has endless surprises in store for lovers of New World wines.
