There's a charred, smoky nuance to the nose of this vibrantly straw-colored, that's a bit distracting, but there's also concentrated lemony fruit that could gain more interesting honeyed notes with another year or so in the bottle. The palate is creamy in texture with intense citrus and spice notes. While typically more Chardonnay in style than Grüner, it's a serious bottling that could pair well with buttery pasta and poultry dishes. ... More details

Varietal: Gruner Veltliner

The highly versatile Gruner Veltliner varietal grapes have been grown for many centuries in central and eastern European countries, and are still widely drunk and celebrated around Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Whilst they are not seen much elsewhere around the world, in recent years they have been cultivated in certain parts of the United States and in a few other New World countries. These pale skinned grapes grow most successfully in cooler climates, and are popular with wineries due to the fact that they are relatively hardy and resistant to disease. Gruner Veltliner grapes are also much appreciated for the fact that they hold some unique flavors which come about because they express their terroir very well, and are often most commonly associated with flavors of citrus fruits, peaches and peppery, tobacco notes.

Region: New York

New York state has a relatively long history of wine-making and vineyard cultivation, with vineyards in the region dating back to the Dutch settlements of the 17th century. As such, the region has slowly discovered the unique qualities of their terroir, and has developed a distinctive set of grape varietals which have gone on to represent the state and make their wines both unique and highly regarded. New York state has four key wine producing areas – Lake Erie AVA, Finger Lakes AVA, Hudson River and Long Island, each making the most of their relatively cool climate and characterful terroirs. The strong blend of both traditional and contemporary wine making methods found in this region has led to New York state being responsible for many of the finest and most interesting wines to come out of the United States.
